Is Sergio Aguero the best soccer player in Europe at the moment? If it wasn’t for the athletic demi-God that is Cristiano Ronaldo, then the answer would almost certainly be yes.
The Argentinian scored two goals on Wednesday evening to inspire Manchester City to a 4-1 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. This came after the Citizens fell a goal behind to Gus Poyet’s side. But rather than being rallied by this setback, Aguero took the game by the scruff off the neck and arrowed a powerful strike into the bottom corner to bring Manchester City level just a few minutes after falling behind.
He then addd another, and this was Aguero’s 19th goal of an already remarkable season. Fourteen of these strikes have come in just 14 Premier League games, and without him, Manchester City would be trailing Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea by an even greater margin.
This is what makes Sergio Aguero’s form so remarkable. At the moment, despite the riches they have spent and the quality of their squad, Manchester City’s performances have been rather poor.
The likes of Yaya Toure, Samri Nasri, and Fernandinho have yet to replicate the form that led Manchester City to the Premier League title last season. Instead it has been left to Aguero, a player who has been blighted with injury over the last two years, to pick up the reigns.
Manchester City have also been unlucky with injuries to key players like Vincent Kompany and David Silva, but Sergio Aguero’s goals, presence, and passion have more than made up for these absences.
The 26-year-old has been relentless since he made his comeback against Liverpool in August. He is now easily the best player in the Premier League at the moment, though Diego Costa could be up there with him if he managed to avoid injuries, and comparisons have already been made to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Unfortunately, in order for Sergio Aguero to actually rival these two soccer icons, he will have to do two things. One is keep up this form for the next few seasons, while also avoiding injury. Two is that he will have to lead Manchester City to consecutive Premier League titles and Champions League glory.
There’s no denying the fact that Aguero has the skill, temperament, and goal-scoring prowess for that to be the case.
But with rumors suggesting that Manuel Pellegrini might be sacked if Manchester City don’t win the league or get out of their Champions League group and other players in his squad failing to perform on a regular basis, Aguero’s brilliance might end up being overshadowed by the failings of others.
