Teenage Carjackers Stumped By Stick Shift

Two teenagers who tried to carjack a man in Houston may be on an upcoming episode of “America’s Dumbest Criminals.” After the holiday weekend, a first-year resident at the Baylor School of Medicine pulled up to the main entrance gate of his IMT apartment when he was suddenly attacked by two teenage “would-be” carjackers pointing a gun in his face, as reported by KPRC-TV.

Police report that a 15-year-old unnamed boy, along with 17-year old Anthony Evans-Warner, were the perpetrators. Much to their surprise, as the teens forced the victim from his car at gunpoint, they soon realized the car had a standard transmission and they had no clue how to drive a stick shift.

Inspector Stefan Happ tells News Max the teens tried to get the victim to show them how to drive the stick shift while still holding a gun on him. The victim told police that he tried to give the carjackers instructions and show them how to drive the car as a gun was held to his head.

After traveling a few blocks down the road, the teens told the victim to get out of the car. They may have thought their Driver’s Ed class was complete.

However, according to News Max, the victim quickly called the police from his cell phone. Happ explains to KRPC-TV what happened once the call was received by the police.

“A vehicle pursuit was initiated. The officers were chasing the vehicle and apparently they had issues operating the vehicle. They then jumped out of the vehicle and ran on foot.”

Both suspects were quickly apprehended and arrested, and the car was returned to the victim. The teens are currently in jail. Evans-Warner is charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.

A similar incident happened in June 2014 in Seattle to 70-year-old Nancy Frederickson when three teens tried to carjack her as she was getting something from her trunk, as per CBS News. Fredrickson, who was driving a five-speed, said the boys couldn’t figure out how to work the car, panicked and ran from the scene.

A security camera nearby captured the boys fleeing the scene.

Frederickson says she can laugh about it now, which CBS News reports is a good thing because “that seems to be what everyone else is doing, too.”
