WWE News: Seth Rollins And Zack Ryder Tell Vince McMahon They Will Be Reaching For The ‘Brass Ring’
In WWE, there has always been an imaginary “brass ring” that Vince McMahon has asked WWE Superstars and Divas to reach for. CM Punk spoke candidly about this in his infamous “pipebomb promo.” He said that no matter how many of Vincent K. McMahon’s imaginary brass rings he pulled down, nothing changed for him in his WWE career. So is it the brass ring that WWE is asking talent to reach for, or is it McMahon not noticing when they do? Regardless of the reason, WWE talent still reach.
Vince McMahon was a guest on “Stone Cold” Steve Austin’s podcast this past week. The WWE Network broadcast the podcast and it was terrific to see. McMahon was seemingly open with all the questions Austin asked him. One in particular was on the current crop of talent. McMahon said that the last guy to really reach for and grab the brass ring was John Cena, and since then no one has done so.
Many would disagree and say plenty of wrestlers have grabbed the ring, such as Daniel Bryan and CM Punk, but WWE does not want to admit such a thing. Either way, it seemed to cause a stir backstage and many took the comments from McMahon to heart. In particular, Seth Rollins and Zack Ryder.
Ryder was doing a terrific job years ago by coming out of nowhere and becoming a star through a YouTube show of his called “Z True Long Island Story.” The show did relatively well. Ryder kept getting more and more popular. His show led to WWE putting a lot of material on YouTube and even adding his show to the page as well. The problem with this was that WWE pretty much killed off the show and ended all momentum for Ryder along with it.
Ryder did an amazing job with getting noticed and even showed up on WWE programming in marquee storylines with people like John Cena. He ended up winning the WWE United States Championship and was a highlight of each WWE RAW show. Then WWE literally killed everything off for him, and he has been a mid-card act since. So was it Ryder who didn’t live up to the ‘net hype or WWE that pretty much destroyed everything he had going for him? Most would say WWE.
Ryder still kept strong in it all and told McMahon via Twitter that he was going to reach for the brass ring, saying.
“When my shoulder is healed and I come back, I’ll grab that brass ring again…but nothing will stop me this time!”
It was a nice touch on his part for saying “again,” because we can all claim he did grab it. However, he was not the only one who responded to McMahon’s comments online, Rollins did as well.
Rollins wrote.
“No better way to grab the brass ring then to take out the so-called last guy to do just that. #WWETLC #TablesMatch How’s that for ambition?”
Rollins has done really well since arriving to the main roster two years ago as a member of The Shield. He has grown leaps and bounds since his debut, as has all the members of The Shield. However, Rollins complemented his ring work with better mic ability, which always seemed to be his Achilles heel on the Indy scene and even in developmental. His look and ring work was always great, but his mic improvement has made him into a star.
The fact that he is now in main event level matches and shows hinge on what he does is a huge deal. He could be WWE’s top heel right now. So it appears that he is certainly reaching for the brass ring and may even be touching it as we speak.
Whether he or Ryder pull it down is another story. However, many experts have claimed that WWE potentially has the most talented roster they have ever had from developmental to the main roster.
WWE easily could be just as good as they were before, but it will take time to do so. If guys step up, that will make the process a lot easier on WWE in the future. Fans will dig the show more due to this as well.
The question now remains. Even if these men reach for and grab this “brass ring,” does that mean WWE management will take notice? WWE could certainly screw over Ryder again. They could simply stop pushing Rollins. Guys like Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns, Bray Wyatt, etc. could show up as well. Will WWE even notice when they do when McMahon himself hasn’t noticed anyone reaching since 2002?
