Siri Can Find Viagra, Marijuana, and Strip Clubs, But Not Abortion Clinics
Siri, the question answering iPhone app is an amazing tool for finding just about anything you need. Want to bury a body in the Hudson River? Siri has the perfect place. Want to score some marijuana? Siri can lead the way. Want to find a prostitute? Siri knows a great escort service. But if you want to find an abortion clinic Siri gets a little confused.
Did you mean an anti-abortion emergency pregnancy clinic?
Raw Story tested Siri around Washington D.C. and found that when searching for abortion clinics, Siri didn’t direct them to Planned Parenthood. Instead, the iPhone app told them to go to the 1st Choice Women’s Health Center, an anti-abortion Crisis Pregnancy Center.
Raw Story writes:
“It’s an experience that’s being replicated by women around the country: despite plentiful online information about actual places to get an abortion, Siri doesn’t seem to provide it.”
Raw Story also suggests that Siri is clueless when it comes to Plan B, and when asked where to find emergency contraception, the app offers up a list of definitions instead of directions.
Siri is, however, great at finding other controversial items. Siri can find places to buy marijuana, it can tell you where to dump a dead body, it can tell you where to go if you want to see naked women, it will recommend a good plastic surgeon for breast implants, and it can even tell you what to do if you get a hamster stuck in your rectum.
But according to Search Engine Land, the Siri abortion controversy is a little blown out of proportion. SEL points out that Siri may get confused if you type in “help me find a places where I can have an abortion,” but if you type in something more direct like “search the web for abortion clinics” or “find a planned parenthood,” Siri will come up with results.
Do you think Siri has an anti-abortion agenda? Or is the app just learning the English language as it goes along?
