Morrissey Concert In Germany Cut Short — Second On Stage Disaster In A Week For Legendary Rocker

Morrissey cut short another concert Monday, this time in Germany, less than a week after storming off a stage in Poland when a heckling fan made an insulting remark about the legendary alternative rock icon’s recent cancer diagnosis. This time, the problem was crazed German fans who stormed the stage.

The former frontman of seminal 1980s band The Smiths, whose full name is Stephen Morrissey, was on stage at the Colosseum Theatre in Essen, Germany, had just launched into a rendition of one of the best-known songs from his solo career, “Every Day Is Like Sunday,” when a group of fans pushed to the front and climbed on to the stage along with Morrissey.

The 55-year-old star and his five-piece band left the stage as security personnel subdued the unruly fans. But after that, apparently, Morrissey did not feel confident enough in the theatre’s security to continue the concert, so he cut it off, failing to return to the stage.

“The gig was great, Morrissey wonderful, but the end, so sad. I was in front of the stage in the middle and one of these hysterical girls beside me — the one who first jumped onto the stage — she was so fast, nobody was able to stop her,” recounted one concertgoer on social media.

“He was in such a brilliant mood, the whole concert was so wonderful, even with the supporting act having Anna Calvi was just excellent,” wrote another, who said she paid twice the face value of her ticket for what she feared might be a final chance to see Morrissey perform live, due to his cancer diagnosis. “And then there are some daft people who spoil it all and think this was great fun.”

In Poland last week, Morrissey cut a concert short after just 25 minutes, when he was offended by a fan who made a cruel comment about his health. He later said, through his management, that he felt “unsafe” and therefore unable to finish the show.

When Morrissey revealed his cancer diagnosis in October he shrugged it off by saying, “if I die, I die.” He pledged to continue performing despite the illness, declaring, “I’ll rest when I’m dead.”

One fan on Facebook expressed gratitude that Morrissey showed up to perform at all, given the state of his health.

Reportedly, fans at the Morrissey concert cut short in Germany had ignored their assigned seats from the start of the performance.
