WWE News: Sting vs. Undertaker Planned For WrestleMania 31
When Sting debuted at Sunday night’s Survivor Series pay-per-view and confronted Triple H, almost every WWE fan believed that the confrontation would lead to a match between Sting and Triple H at WrestleMania 31 in the spring of 2015. However, PW Insider has reported that is not the case.
After Undertaker’s WrestleMania undefeated streak was broken at WrestleMania 30 by Brock Lesnar, most people believed that was a sign that Undertaker was going to retire. Now, it looks like Undertaker’s final match will be at WrestleMania 31 against Sting.
PW Insider also added in the report that WWE is planning on having Sting take on Triple H at the Royal Rumble event on January 25, and the reasoning behind it is so the WWE audience can become familiar with Sting, and so Sting can have a good match, look strong, and pick up a win leading into his match with Undertaker at WrestleMania 31.
Sting vs. Undertaker has come close to happening in the past, as Sting almost left TNA and joined WWE back in 2011. Ultimately, Sting decided to stay with TNA and Undertaker wrestled Triple H at that year’s WrestleMania.
Before Monday’s RAW, WWE.com teased fans with the idea that Sting would be showing up on the show. However, Sting never did, and the idea of Sting being on the show wasn’t even considered by WWE.
If you look at the ratings pattern for Monday’s RAW, it appears that WWE were hopeful that Sting would show up on the show, as they did their biggest rating against Monday Night Football so far this year.
In the first hour WWE RAW had 4.73 million people watching, in the second hour their audience dropped to 3.99 million viewers and in the third hour their audience slightly increased to 4.01 million viewers. The loss of so many viewers is likely due to the fact that people figured out that Sting wasn’t going to appear on the show.
With WWE planning Sting vs Undertaker at WrestleMania 31, that leaves Triple H without a WrestleMania opponent for now. However, with the stipulation in place that John Cena is the only person that can put Triple H and Stephanie McMahon back in power, Triple H will likely face John Cena at WrestleMania 31, with the stipulation of should Triple H win, he and Stephanie will be put back into power.
Triple H vs. John Cena may not be the match that WWE fans are dying to see, however, at least WWE is planning on giving the fans Undertaker vs. Sting, which is a match that wrestling fans have been dying to see for several years now.
It’s also likely that the Sting vs. Undertaker match at WrestleMania 31 will end up being a career vs. career match, with Undertaker winning and Sting retiring the next night on RAW.
