‘Zoolander 2’ Is A Go, Might Star Penelope Cruz
With the commercial success of Dumb & Dumber To, it was only a matter of time before Ben Stiller’s Zoolander sequel moved along in production. The film has been in the works for years, but serious motion was happening a few months ago. We had heard from Will Ferrell that a script was finished and then everything went quiet again.
Now it looks like production on the upcoming Zoolander sequel is finally picking up some speed. According to Deadline, Penelope Cruz will star alongside Ben Stiller, who will reprise his role as Derek Zoolander.
The last time the Inquisitr reported on Zoolander developments, rumors that Ferrell would return as the villainous Mugatu were basically confirmed. In an interview with JoBlo, Ferrell said that “We are actually supposed to do a read-through of a sequel script soon, and Mugatu is a part of it.” Additionally, Owen Wilson is expected to return as Hansel.
As for Cruz, we don’t know who she will play but we wouldn’t be surprised if she was a supermodel.
Back in September, here’s what we knew of the Zoolander 2 plot.
“The Zoolander 2 plot would have to do with how the fashion world moves so quickly. So, the movie will begin at a time when the whole world has moved on from Derek and Hansel because they’re so ancient history. It’s about them having to reinvent themselves and try to become relevant again.”
Stiller expanded on the immediate conflict within the sequel’s plot.
“It’s ten years later and most of it is set in Europe. I don’t want to give away too much, but it’s basically Derek and Hansel ten years later. Though the last movie ended on a happy note, a lot of things have happened in the meantime. Their lives have changed and they’re not really relevant anymore. It’s a new world for them. Will Ferrell is written into the script and he’s expressed interest in doing it. I think Mugatu is an integral part of the Zoolander story, so yes, he features in a big way.”
At first, Justin Theroux was set to act as the film’s director, but since he’s busy with his HBO series The Leftovers, he has stepped down. It’s believed that Ben Stiller will direct Zoolander 2, and what we’ve seen from Stiller’s work behind the camera, he’s more than ready to tackle this.
Fans are already hoping this sequel is quickly on its way.
