Bill Cosby ‘Spanish Fly’ Routine On Drugging Women: Coincidence?
The Bill Cosby “Spanish Fly” routine has picked up new and unfortunate notoriety after Alan Scherstuhl of the Village Voice unearthed it in light of the recent resurgence of rape allegations against the popular comedian.
In the routine, Cosby jokes with his audience about a drug known as Spanish Fly that was supposed to make women fall over themselves with sexual desire when it’s placed in their drinks.
At least three of the Bill Cosby rape allegations that have been made follow a similar scenario where the comedian allegedly drugged his accusers and then sexually assaulted them (again, allegedly).
While the rape accusations have been around for decades — and come from around 13 women — details didn’t start to emerge until 2004 when Andrea Constand spoke up.
This encouraged Barbara Bowman to follow suit, and most recently, the Inquisitr shared Joan Tarshis’ account.
All follow similar patterns and seem to complement each other. The Bill Cosby “Spanish Fly” routine (embedded below) is sure to only pour gasoline on the fire.
Scherstuhl writes about the connection.
“Even when I heard this bit as a kid, I wondered: Why would famous TV stars need a drug to get women interested in them? Why is sex something to lie and cheat and scheme to get, rather than something to share? Hearing it now, it’s positively chilling, especially the crowd’s easy laughter, which suggests that Cosby was able to put over his fantasy of women stripped of their ability to say no as something near universal.”
Merits of the routine aside, it is important to note that Bill Cosby hasn’t been convicted of anything at this point, and his attorneys vehemently deny the “discredited” accusations similarly to the way that Woody Allen denied the accusations that he sexually assaulted adopted daughter Dylan when she was just seven years old.
Details of the Farrow case closely resembled the lyrics of a song by Dory Previn entitled, “With My Daddy in the Attic.” Previn knew Allen’s ex-wife and chief accuser, Mia Farrow, intimately. She had stolen Dory’s husband.
Supporters of Cosby, like supporters of Allen, are now pointing out that the women accusing the comedian of rape may have derived details from the Bill Cosby “Spanish Fly” routine.
Still, with 13 women telling a similar story, the allegations will continue to haunt Cosby and keep his PR team busy.
What do you think of these rape accusations, readers, and do you think the Bill Cosby “Spanish Fly” routine is a coincidence or confession?
