Jim Carrey: Here’s Why The Actor Desperately Needed ‘Dumb And Dumber To’
In Dumb and Dumber To, Jim Carrey was able to reprise a role that he first played on the big-screen back in 1994 — Lloyd Christmas.
The horrible bowl cut hairdo and authentic chipped tooth created the iconic look of the character, but Jim Carrey’s comic timing and hilarious acting is what made Lloyd Christmas one of his most memorable characters.
In the years since the original Dumb and Dumber was released, Jim Carrey has had a quite a few blockbuster hits — especially in the late 1990s, including Batman Forever, Liar Liar, and Me, Myself and Irene. However, the 52-year-old actor put his foot down when it came to doing sequels.
According to OMG Facts, sources claim that Jim Carrey refused to do movie sequels because of him having “too much integrity,” and he didn’t “want to essentially make the same movie a second time.”
Many people might argue that Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls was a commercially successful sequel — which means that Jim Carrey should have been willing to do another sequel. However, OMG Facts reports that the Ace Ventura movies came around during the early stages of his Hollywood movie career and he was still trying to make a name for himself.
Jim Carrey’s career skyrocketed after 1994, which is why it would make sense that the former In Living Color actor would not have felt the need to sign up for a sequel.
That is, of course, until 2013 when he decided to reprise the role that helped to make him a blockbuster, A-list movie star in the highly-anticipated sequel, Dumb and Dumber To.
Recent reports have confirmed that Dumb and Dumber To was the #1 movie at the U.S. box office in its opening weekend, which speaks volumes. This is exactly what Jim Carrey needed.
Why? When was the last time that Jim Carrey was the leading actor of a box-office hit?
Even though he had supporting roles in blockbuster movies in recent years (including Anchorman 2), Jim Carrey’s last leading role was in the box-office flop The Incredible Burt Wonderstone starring Steve Carell and Olivia Wilde.
The 2011 film, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, was a box-office hit that focused on Jim Carrey as the lead as was Yes Man which was released three years prior. However, Jim Carrey’s film career has truly been plagued with quite a few box-office slumps in the past decade or so.
Dumb and Dumber To allowed moviegoers and critics to see that Jim Carrey still has it. Even though the reviews of the overall movie were not very positive, many fans and critics alike have had nothing but great things to say about Jim Carrey’s performance.
Perhaps Jim Carrey will be able to use the box office success from this Dumb and Dumber sequel to breathe new life into his big-screen movie career. What do you think?
