Assassin’s Creed Unity’s Third Patch To Fix Major Glitches

Assassin’s Creed Unity, being the first Assassin’s Creed title exclusive to the newest generation of game consoles, was one of the most anticipated video games of 2014, but it’s been subject to a very mixed reaction since its release this past Tuesday. While the new twists to the gameplay, and the increase in graphical fidelity were generally praised, the game shipped with a number of very noticeable glitches that weren’t resolved in either the game’s day one patch or a second update a few days later.

According to The Verge, Ubisoft, the developer and publisher of Assassin’s Creed Unity, insisted on all reviews being embargoed until noon eastern time on the release date only added fuel to the fire, as it made them look like they went out of their way to keep the game’s problems hidden. Today, Ubisoft released partial notes for the third patch, which they expect to fix the remaining major bugs.

With widespread reports of characters’ faces turning invisible, player character Arno falling through the floor, non-player characters randomly getting stuck in pieces of the background, and so on, Ubisoft needed to take action. International Business Times noted that this came on the heels of Watch Dogs making a disappointing impression after months of delays made it easy to create a narrative of Ubisoft showing a lack of quality control and under-delivering on its biggest franchises. While no date has been announced for the third Assassin’s Creed Unity patch as of yet, from the released notes, Ubisoft appears to be trying their best to get rid of the biggest game, and immersion-breaking, bugs ahead of anything else:

Gameplay: this includes bugs like Arno getting stuck on certain areas of the map (including a few more hay carts), problems with getting into/out of cover, character animation bugs, and general camera problems

AI & Crowd: in this category are problems with NPC animations, crowd events, and crowd stations, NPC navigation issues, as well as bugs related to NPCs detecting Arno’s activities in various situations

Matchmaking & Connectivity: this covers a number of issues related to co-op play, including bugs with joining games in-progress and problems that happen during host migration

Menus & HUD: fixes in this category will address missing details in certain menus, problems with some of the mission objective and co-op update pop-ups, localization inconsistencies, as well as some of the issues with menus and pop-ups overlapping each other

General Stability: this includes fixes for a number of crash situations we’ve identified in both campaign and co-op modes.

It could be a while before we see this update, though: Before Assassin’s Creed Unity, VentureBeat pegged Assassin’s Creed III as the most glitch-ridden Assassin’s Creed game, and its big patch didn’t drop for over a month and a half after its October 30, 2012 release.
