Shailene Woodley On Indies: ‘Everyone Is An Equal’
Shailene Woodley is one of those unique performers who uses her star power to drive blockbusters and smaller films. Variety reported today that Woodley, at the young age of 22, “can’t be pigeonholed” as a result of her diverse choices and her equal credibility in both big-budget and small-budget movies.
Woodley will receive the Indie Impact Award on November 15 at the Napa Valley Film Festival. She told Variety she likes the culture of independents as well as their cinematic value.
“No one is there to make money, or to receive accolades in the form of glamour and glitz. I also love that everyone is treated as like an equal. Everyone is just as vital to the eventual outcome — whether you are a producer, a caterer, an actor, a gaffer or a teamster.”
While audiences might know her starring turns in Divergent and The Fault in Our Stars, even her most devoted fans might have missed her recent independent films The Spectacular Now and White Bird in a Blizzard.
Woodley said choosing the right project comes down to a gut feeling.
“My intuition either signals butterflies to explode in my stomach. Sometimes you want to love a particular character, or you want to be a part of a project based on elements such as the director or fellow actors, but if the basic butterflies don’t exist, then chances are someone else is better suited for that film and I wish them well.”
While Woodley is being recognized for her independent film work, the trailer for the latest installment of the Divergent franchise, Insurgent, has been released. As theDaily Mail reported, the trailer shows Shailene in full-on action mode and features Ashley Judd as her character’s mother. Theo James, who starred in the first film as Woodley’s love interest, does not appear in the new clip.
Although James is not in the current trailer, E! Online reported that he was seen filming the movie with Woodley back in August. The Inquisitr reported back in July that Theo and Shailene will indeed be back for more than one Divergent sequel.
As for any future career moves for Woodley, she hinted to Variety she may not stick with acting for the rest of her life. The well-known fan of holistic health indicated she has many possibilities on her mind.
“Massage therapy, psychology and all things culinary are all interests of mine and ones I could absolutely see myself tackling and being quite good at it too!”
Divergent: Insurgent opens on March 20.
