Have you ever wondered what really happens when housekeeping comes to clean your hotel room when you aren’t there? Of course, you may assume staff members are probably rummaging through your belongings in search of something valuable to steal. However, that notion isn’t always easy to prove. So, one man decided to go a step further to ensure his luggage was safe inside the room.
According to the Daily Mail , United States holidaymaker, Vince Stravix, left his webcam running on his laptop inside the room at the unidentified “brand-named” hotel. Needless to say, he wasn’t pleased with footage.
The shocking video, which was filmed on Nov. 5, was uploaded to YouTube on Saturday, Nov. 8. It quickly gained popularity and began circulating around social media and has since gone viral with more than 1.3 million views.
The caption for the video read.
“This happened on the 5th of November, 2014. I was staying at a brand-named hotel and I kept all of my items laid out in my room. Not anymore though…”
The nearly four-minute video also has captions chronicling the housekeeper’s actions. It begins with the housekeeper entering the room. At first, it seems like she has just come to do her job as she abruptly turns to go in the bathroom to remove towels and empty the trash. But unfortunately, her diligence doesn’t last long. She can be seen picking up a package the guest received that morning, looking at a PlayStation 3 gaming system and games, and rummaging through luggage. But, that’s not all!
She even made several attempts to access a Google Chromebook tablet and the laptop housing the webcam.
According to Hotel Chatter , the housekeeper reportedly did not steal anything. However, her actions are still a violation of the guest’s privacy. Of course, the footage has sparked a debate online. While some people feel her actions aren’t “a big deal” since nothing was stolen, others are reeling over the violation of privacy and other problems that could arise from such actions.
“I dont think its that much of a big deal, i mean they shouldnt do it but i probably would have done the same 10 years ago. They are not stealing things, they just want to use it for a moment, again they shouldnt use your stuff but really nothing much happened here,” YouTube user Respeezy said.
“It’s totally shady to go through peoples things, just do your job and get out of my room. I hope her boss saw this and fired her and I hope a police report was made so she can never be trusted again,” Ask Wilde Hilde said.
“One likely explanation is boredom and i’m sure plenty of people do this simply out of boredom, but then there’s also the chance this person may have been trying to see which devices aren’t locked so that they can steal them. Many think theft is planned, but more often then not it’s a matter of opportunity. you leave your device unlocked and someone like this might think, “hey this isn’t locked, i can use it, take it and add a password and make it mine,” another user said.
“I thought they should keep the doors open while they clean the rooms,” a reader suggested via Daily Mail.
