Off Again? Is Nicki Minaj Dissing Boyfriend Safaree In New Track ‘Bed Of Lies?’
Apparently, nobody knows nothing about what’s going on between Nicki Minaj and her longtime-maybe-split-up-now boyfriend, Safaree Samuels. But if Minaj is indeed singing about her own life in a newly released song, things look even worse than the rumors would have you believe.
Bossip on Monday pointed to Nicki Minaj’s performance as she hosted the 2014 MTV EMAs in Glasgow, Scotland on Sunday. In addition to hosting the show, Minaj rocked a sold-out crowd for the award show, performing her latest hit, “Super Bass.”
The rumor mill churned up in earnest, though, when Minaj slowed things down to debut a Skylar Grey-assisted track, “Bed of Lies.”
What’s so scandalous about the track? Well, here’s a snippet of the (edited, of course) lyrics:
You could never make eye contact
Everything you got was based off of my contacts
You a fraud, but I’mma remain icon-stat
Balenciaga’s on my boots with the python strap
You was caught up in the rush, and you was caught up in the thrill of it
You was with me way before I hit a quarter mil’ in it

I was killin’ it, man you got me poppin’ pills in it
I told Baby hit you, I said this dude buggin’
Cause I was doing it for us, I told em f*** the public
Couldn’t believe that I was home alone contemplating

They say you don’t know what you got ’til it’s gone
They say that your darkest hour comes before your dawn
But there was something I should’ve asked all along
Well, okay then. Of course, this could be a case of internet gossip mongers confusing the artist with the art, but Nicki’s lyrics on “Bed of Lies” seem a bit personal. Her boyfriend Safaree Samuels was in fact with her way before she “hit a quarter mil'” in record sales, and as some have pointed out before, nobody really knows what Safaree does, aside from dating Nicki Minaj.
Add to that the rumors that their relationship has been more off-again than on-again of recent, and it’s starting to look like we’ve got a confessional track on our hands.
Of course, there’s no mention in the track of Nicki smashing up the Mercedes Benz she bought Safaree with a baseball bat, so she’s still got plausible deniability.
Then again, if the recent Beyonce-Jay Z “On The Run Tour” taught us anything, it’s that maybe it’s best not to assume that an artist is actually singing about their personal life when they’re on the stage.
