Excuse Me, But Your Domino’s Pizza Has A Lot Of Technology In It
Once again, third quarter numbers have been released. Once again, Domino’s is leading the way in the pizza delivery business. Why is it that, time and again, Domino’s is dominating? Simple: It’s all the technology in your pizza!
Okay, so you won’t find wires and bits of keyboard in your pizza, but you will find Domino’s is one of the few companies focusing on easier technological ways to get to their product. NPR is reporting that Domino’s is winning the battle because they’re facing the appropriate marketplace and bringing innovation to that market. That marketplace is the internet.
“Innovation, coming up with the ideas is one side of the challenge. But then you actually have to be able to deliver [the technology],” says Kelly Garcia, Domino’s vice president of development.
“This technology is difficult,” Garcia says. “It takes a lot of money, and it’s complicated to put together, and so it just becomes a major differentiator for us when we look across the landscape of our competitors in quick-service restaurants.”
Garcia attributes this focus on why Domino’s same-store sales are on the rise for this quarter, while the same statistic for Pizza Hut and Papa John’s remain stagnant.
One of the biggest reasons Domino’s is so successful is they make ordering fun. If you’ve never experienced the Pizza Tracker online, it is highly recommended. You can modify the style and look of it, and it will tell you who is making, baking, packing, and delivering your pizza. And it quite accurate, time-wise. The new piece, however, will be an app you can download to your smartphone to make orders. His name is Dom.
Dom is somewhat similar to Apple’s Siri, but Dom will help you get the pizza you want and get it quickly. It will be interactive, and ordering pizza will never be more interesting. However, Domino’s Australia may have the best idea, but there’s no word on if it will be making its way to America.
Slate is reporting that Domino’s Australia has rolled out Pizza Mogul, and it has three simple steps: Create, Share, Earn. You go online to order your pizza, then share the ingredients, and give it a catchy name. It’s then put on the menu, so others may order it, should your taste strikes their fancy. Then, once you enlist in the program (meaning you agree that you own the name of the pizza, but Domino’s Australia owns the sublicense to market it, and are a resident of Australia), your item goes on their menu board. A person can make between $0.25 and $4.25 (Australian) per pizza.
The program has proven quite successful. A man simply known as the Pizza Master created a Mega Meat Lover’s Pizza, which includes, rasher bacon, pulled pork, ground beef, smoked ham, seasoned chicken, pepperoni, italian sausage, mozzarella cheese, and barbecue sauce. To this point, his recipe for success has sold over 12,000 pizzas for $30,000 Australian ($27,800 American).
For those who want, you can also share your profits with charities right through Domino’s Australia. Again, this program is not available in the United States — yet. But, with the numbers our Australian cousins are making, it should be a matter of time until Pizza Mogul hits the American coastline.
Of course, it did help that Domino’s improved the quality of their pizza a few years ago.
