‘DWTS’ Star Bethany Mota Offers Advice To Aspiring YouTube Stars [Video]
Bethany Mota recently opened up about how she became one of YouTube’s most successful beauty vloggers, and what she’s learned from her experience could help other aspiring internet stars who want their voices to be heard.
Bethany Mota and Dancing with the Stars partner Derek Hough recently talked to Access Hollywood, and most of their conversation was about the talented teen’s rise to YouTube super-stardom. Hough praised Bethany for having such a huge positive influence on her fans.
“I went to Sydney and I saw the impact of what she makes on all these young girls, they call themselves the Mota-vators. It’s been amazing to go into her world and see, you know, her influence. It’s been amazing.”
Mota wasn’t always so popular — she revealed that she first started making YouTube videos because she was being bullied.
“I was actually cyberbullied by people that I knew… I don’t know exactly the reason why they felt the need to bully me, for whatever reason. And being so young, I had never dealt with anything like that before.”
Bethany Mota and Derek Hough likely bonded over their bullying experiences. As the Inquisitr previously reported, Hough was also the victim of brutal bullying that included a gun being held to his head. Derek used dance as a way to escape the pain of being treated so horrifically, and Bethany did something similar to deal with being bullied. At age 13, Mota turned to YouTube as a welcome distraction from the negativity in her life. Surprisingly, the beauty guru admits that she actually wasn’t that into makeup or fashion.
“I just really loved the idea of having a voice all of a sudden and when I felt like I didn’t have one and being able to speak to people all around the world.”
Everyone who posts videos on YouTube won’t become a web sensation like Bethany Mota, but she has some advice for those who want to make the most of the social media platform.
For one thing, you don’t need a ton of fancy equipment to get started, and you don’t need to be a pro at editing videos. When Bethany first started, she just used her parents’ old video camera. Find your voice first, and you can work on all the extra stuff later.
One of Bethany Mota’s best tips is to make sure that you’re not being mota-vated by money or fame. Choose something you’re really passionate about to vlog about.
“It has to be authentic; you have to do it from the start for the love of it. Like you would dance, it has to be from within. When I started the channel, it was never the intention of what could I get out of it.”
Mota revealed that she never speaks from a script, and she advises vloggers to be careful about promoting products on YouTube — you might lose your subscribers’ trust if they feel like you’re only recommending certain products because you’re getting paid to do so.
“If I go out there and I talk about all of Hess brands and products just because I’m getting paid for it, that’s not authentic… I’ve always gone by the motto of only talking about what I genuinely love.”
Bethany Mota isn’t just great at giving good advice — she also knows how to take it. This is very evident from her stint on Dancing with the Stars. She and Derek Hough have consistently been one of the show’s top-scoring couples, and last week was no exception. The dynamic duo scored 37 out of 40 points for their spicy I Love Lucy-themed salsa.
According to Buddy TV, this week Derek and Bethany will be performing a Viennese waltz to Jessie Ware’s “Say You Love Me.” They’ll also perform a trio dance with Betsey Johnson’s former pro partner, Tony Dovolani. The threesome will be doing the Argentine Tango.
