Ed Sheeran Can’t Stop Topping The Charts — ‘Thinking Out Loud’ Crawls To Number One And Shatters A Record
Not long after the release of Ed Sheeran’s sophomore album X (or Multiply), his single “Thinking Out Loud” has worked its way to the top of the U.K. singles chart. This isn’t Sheeran’s first time making the charts with his second record. Ed’s record X enjoyed a comfortable spot in at number one in the Billboard charts for awhile. Now its biggest single is soaking up the glory of a record-breaking climb to the top, and Sheeran is darn proud of it.
According to BBC, Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” has climbed to the top of the charts slower than any single before it, starting low on the charts in June and crawling its way into the top 10, and eventually, the number one spot this week. Sheeran has enjoyed lots of success lately, particularly from a collaboration with Pharrell called “Sing.” His newest hit single marks his second number one spot within a six month period, and Ed shows no signs of stopping.
The previous record for the longest climb to the top was held by Celine Dion with her 1994 single “Think Twice,” which took a whole 13 weeks to reach number one. But Ed Sheeran’s track shattered that record by taking 19 weeks.
“I’m not used to having number one singles and this is my favourite song on the album, my favourite song I’ve written,” said Ed Sheeran, “so I’m really proud it’s getting this recognition.”
According to The Independent, Ed Sheeran’s personal favorite of his own songs is the most streamed track on audio services. “Thinking Out Loud” has more than 14,000,000 total plays and has already accumulated 1.6 million streams within the past week alone.
So far, Sheeran’s X is the fastest-selling record of 2014, and the longest running album in the number one spot. Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass” could give Sheeran a run for his money, however, having had the longest run for a number one single by a female artist this year and taking the number two spot just below Ed.

Despite all his success, Ed Sheeran has maintained a pretty laid-back and humble attitude about his career. Even after his ex-girlfriend, Ellie Goulding, cheated on him with One Direction’s Niall Horan, Sheeran kept a cool head and publicly announced he’s long forgiven both of them. What do you think about Ed Sheeran’s climb to the top? What do you think of “Thinking Out Loud”?
