‘Doctor Who’ Spoilers: The Doctor Faces Missy And Cybermen In The Season 8 Finale
With the new season of Doctor Who comes a new foe – maybe. There isn’t much known about the character of Missy (played by Michelle Gomez), who has been introduced in Season 8 and seen over several episodes by characters who have died, but as Digital Spy revealed, with the official synopsis of “Death in Heaven,” she’ll be playing a big role in the season finale.
In the Doctor Who Season 8 (or Series 8, depending on where you live) finale, written by Steven Moffat, the Doctor must contend with both a new enemy and an old one, as The Inquisitr previously reported.
“With Cybermen on the streets of London, old friends unite against old enemies, and the Doctor takes to the air in a startling new role. Can the mighty UNIT contain Missy? As the Doctor faces his greatest challenge, sacrifices must be made before the day is won.”
However, before that, as Digital Spy points out, there’s the first part of the two-part finale, “Dark Water.” The synopsis for it does seem to promise the beginning of something big.
“In the mysterious world of the Nethersphere, plans have been drawn. Missy is about to come face to face with the Doctor, and an impossible choice is looming… ‘Death is not an end’ promises the sinister organization known only as 3W – but, as the Doctor and Clara discover, you might wish it was.”
Peter Capaldi’s character is certainly going to have his hands full, even as questions remain about Missy’s identity and this so-called Promised Land that has been mentioned time and time again this season. Houston Press has put together a list of the eight best theories about Gomez’s character, who has been described thus far as “The Gatekeeper of the Nethersphere,” and has been seen welcoming the dead to a new place. Some of their theories include that she is the Master, the Woman in the Shop who gave Clara the number of the TARDIS and a Cyber-Planner, which they point out would fit with the Cybermen returning in “Death in Heaven.”
Wherever she is and whoever Missy is, a clip from “The Caretaker” shows her assistant telling a newly admitted person, “She’s a bit busy today,” as an excuse for why he’s handling this welcome.
Also, if you’re already dreading the end of this season, the BBC is hosting a special fan event to mark the release of Doctor Who Season 8 on DVD and Blu-ray. Den of Geek reports that Capaldi and Jenna Coleman will both be attending the event on November 17. Frank Skinner, who guest starred in “Mummy on the Orient Express,” will be quizzing them about the show, and he couldn’t be more excited.
“When they asked me to host this event, I was over the moon. Luckily the space-dragon incubation period is such that I was in no real danger. I have so many questions I want to ask and, when we’re all talked out, I’m planning to finish off by crowd-surfing for 10 to 15 minutes, dressed as Chief Engineer Perkins.”
Doctor Who Season 8 airs Saturdays at 9 p.m. on BBC America. The finale begins with “Dark Water” on November 1. What’s your theory about Missy?
