Is Gerard Pique Set For A Return To Old Trafford?
Barcelona defender Gerard Pique is the latest player to be linked to a move to Manchester United, with the Reds desperate to add stability within the backline. Pique, a former Manchester United player, has not been favoured by new manager Luis Enrique with the Barça boss preferring Javier Mascherano and Mathieu.
With unparalleled success at Barcelona, Gerard Pique is not used to warming the bench at the Camp Nou. Pique’s time at Barcelona coincided with the club’s golden years, the 27-year-old won the Champions League twice and the League four times with the Catalonia giants.
Should Pique decide to return to Old Trafford, he would be expected to start, given the performance of the Man United defense throughout the season. However, Gerard remains resolute in winning back his place in the starting eleven at the Camp Nou.
In a recent interview Pique declared, “You never know what the future holds, but right now, I love this city, I love the people in the club, and most importantly, I love the institution. I don’t see myself leaving.”
Speculation of Gerard Pique returning to Old Trafford would only intensify after Man United’s 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion. Manchester United manager, Louis Van Gaal, was irritated by his team inability to keep a clean sheet. Van Gaal stated, “I don’t think West Bromwich Albion has created many chances, I think zero, and we gave the two goals away.”
Van Gaal is just one point better off than David Moyes was at the same period of last season. The Dutch manager’s fixture list is about to get harder as he faces Chelsea and Manchester City back to back.
However, Louis Van Gaal believes that his team could still catch runaway leaders Chelsea, despite being 10 points behind the Blues. “That’s possible but it is difficult to say,” Van Gaal said. “But I am arrogant because I have done it a lot of times.”
Perhaps a move for Gerard Pique in the January transfer market would kick start United’s vapid season.
United are set to face Chelsea on Sunday at Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, Gerard Pique will be hoping to impress his current manager with the ‘El Clasico’ just around the corner.
Do you believe that Gerard Pique would improve the current starting eleven? Is the Spanish defender better off fighting for his place at Barcelona, given Manchester United’s lackluster start to the season?
