Meghan Trainor Has The Longest Running Female Number One Single In 2014 — Is The Positive Body Message The Cause?
Singer/songwriter Meghan Trainor has earned herself the honor of being the longest running female artist to have a number one hit single in 2014.
According to Official Charts, U.S.-born Trainor has taken the pop music world by storm with her debut song “All About That Bass.” Meghan’s single has sat comfortably in the top spot on the Official Singles Chart for three straight weeks, starting back in September. This makes Meghan Trainor’s track the longest running single by a female musician to hit the number one spot in 2014, and the second longest running number one single in 2014 overall. The number one spot went to Clean Bandit’s “Rather Be,” featuring Jess Glynne, which has topped the charts for four straight weeks.
Meghan Trainor’s track “All About That Bass” has sold more than 100,000 copies each of the three weeks in the top spot. This week, Trainor’s song sold 109,000 copies, with 14 percent of those sales attributed to audio streams. Thanks to online streaming, Meghan also wins the title of most-streamed artist of the week.
Only six other singles have been streamed nearly as much as Meghan Trainor’s tune, all hitting over one million streams. In addition to Trainor’s “All About That Bass,” top streaming singles include Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off,” Calvin Harris’ “Blame,” Jessie J, Ariana Grande, and Nicki Minaj’s “Bang Bang,” Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud,” Lilly Wood and Robin Schulz’s “Prayer In C,” and Sam Smith’s “I’m Not The Only One.”
According to Metro, Meghan Trainor’s success has kept One Direction from making it to the top spot. The boy band only made it up to the number three spot with “Steal My Girl.” One Direction‘s Niall Horan was hoping the single could beat out Trainor’s “All About That Bass,” but he admitted in a recent tweet that it would be difficult.

Part of the success of Meghan Trainor’s track could be the positive body-image behind it. Many of the lyrics reference Trainor’s larger size.
“Yeah, it’s pretty clear, I ain’t no size two
But I can shake it, shake it
Like I’m supposed to do.”
