‘Batman V Superman’ Director Zack Snyder On Board For Two ‘Justice League’ Films
Batman v Superman director Zack Snyder is on board to direct DC Entertainment’s two Justice League films, which will come in 2017 and 2019. The big announcement was made on Thursday by Warner Bros. chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara, who outlined what the studio has in store at a stockholder’s meeting.
WB’s push to expand the DC Comics universe began with the 2013 blockbuster Man of Steel, starring British actor Henry Cavill in the role of Superman. We didn’t know it back then but that was the beginning of the studio finally doing something to compete with those super successful Marvel films.
As previously reported by the Inquisitr, the lineup the studio has planned following the release of Batman v Superman is every fanboy’s dream. This is what we know so far.
The ambitious schedule will also include standalone Batman and Superman films — presumably starring Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, respectively — between 2016 and 2020. So far, Zack Snyder has signed on to direct both Justice League films and it wouldn’t be far fetched to think he could also direct the standalones.
From today’s announcement it seems WB has kept everyone that was clamoring for more DC Comics films happy. However, now the speculation as to who will be cast in the main roles begins. As with any major production, the studio will need to secure its main stars far in advance.
Tsujihara noted that Affleck and Cavill will return following their Batman v Superman roles — along with Amy Adams — for the much talked about Justice League, with Snyder at the helm. Even though the announcement was not made at the investor’s meeting, it was included in the official press release later on.
About four months ago there were rumors that The Batman, starring Affleck, would be released in 2019. This is still possible but will depend on the actor/director’s schedule. This could effectively start a new trilogy about the Caped Crusader for example and perhaps was a deciding factor for Affleck accepting the role. Talk was that he would direct this standalone or one of the others planned.
We will also see a Superman film, which we can expect to focus more on continuing the story that started it all when Zack Snyder directed Man of Steel. With the inclusion of several other DC characters, it seems like Batman v Superman will not be a true sequel to the 2013 blockbuster.
According to the studio’s press release, 2018 and 2020 are dedicated to standalones, which means we could see the continuation of the characters we’ll revisit in Batman v Superman. Stay tuned for up-to-date information about Warner Bros. big announcement.
