Mitt Romney’s Obama joke made national headlines not long after the former Republican presidential candidate uttered the phrase during a rally in Iowa for Senate candidate Joni Ernst . After Romney was handed the microphone he told the cheering crowd then when running for office, advisers often tell candidates that they should not tell jokes. “But I’m not running for office, so I can tell one,” Mitt Romney stated with a broad smile on his face.
Here’s Romney’s Obama joke, as shared by the National Journal.
“President Obama went to the bank to cash a check and he didn’t have his ID. And the teller said you’ve got to prove who you are.”
“He said, ‘How should I do that?’ She said the other day Phil Mickelson came in, he didn’t have his ID but he set up a little cup on the ground, took a golf ball, putted it right into that cup so they knew it was Phil Mickelson. They cashed his check.
“And then Andre Agassi came in. And Andre Agassi didn’t have his ID either. He put a little target on the wall, took a tennis ball and racquet – hit it onto that target time. We knew that was Andre Agassi so we cashed his check.”
And she said to him, ‘Is there anything you can do to prove who you are?’ And [Obama] said, ‘I don’t have a clue.’
“And she said, ‘Well, Mr. President, do you want your money in small bills or large bills[?]’”
Many political watchers now believe that any rumors about Mitt Romney running for president in 2016 have been thoroughly squashed. Several Iowa campaign event attendees told Joni Ernst that when she gets to the Senate she should make it a priority to convince Romney to run for president once again. The former candidate merely laughed at the comment.
During the Joni Ernst for Senate campaign event, she and Mitt Romney met with approximately 40 agricultural executives and business leaders. The majority of the group also reportedly attempted to convince Romney to throw his hat in the presidential ring once again. “If his [Romney] address was 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, I would sleep a lot better,” an Iowa state legislator said after Romney and Ernst concluded their speeches. Chants of “Run, Mitt, run” were often heard during the Iowa political event.
Do you think Mitt Romney should run for president again? What do you think of Romney’s Obama joke?
