Bethany Paquette: Christian Claims Employer Rejected Her Because Of Her Religion, Mockingly Claimed He Would Have Sex With God

Bethany Paquette just wanted to get a job with a Norwegian wilderness tourism company, but instead the Trinity Western University graduate said she was mocked for her religion by a job interviewer who went on to mock God, promising to have sex with the deity if he ever met him.

Paquette was applying for work in Amaruk Wilderness Corp., where she hoped to put her extensive experience as a rafting guide to use.

But Paquette said she ended up being rejected because of her own beliefs and the actions of her college. Trinity Western University has attracted controversy for prohibiting students from having sex outside of heterosexual marriage, expelling students found in violation of the rule.

“It did really hurt me and I did feel really attacked on the basis that I’m a Christian,” Paquette said.

Bethany Paquette said the attack came from Olaf Amundsen, the company’s hiring manager. In an email, Amundsen reportedly claimed that Paquette wasn’t qualified, adding that “unlike Trinity Western University, we embrace diversity, and the right of people to sleep with or marry whoever they want.”

Paquette filed a formal complaint with the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal, and spoke about her experience to the CBC. She said the rejection left her furious, adding that her personal believes “don’t come into play when I am doing my job.”

But Amundsen didn’t stop with the attack on Paquette. In the rejection email, he went on to attack Christianity, claiming it “destroyed [the Norse] culture, tradition and way of life.”

In a follow-up email, Amundsen responded to Paquette signing her email “God Bless” and got even more graphic about what he would do if he came face-to-face with God

“I do not want to be blessed by some guy… who has been the very reason for the most horrendous abuses and human rights violations in the history of the human race,” he said, using an expletive to state that he would have sex with God if he ever met him.

Amaruk Wilderness Corp. responded to the claim, telling the CBC that it rejected Paquette for her lack of experience, not her personal beliefs.

“As per rejection letter attached, Ms. Paquette was not considered for a position with our company solely based on the fact that she did not meet the minimum requirements of the position.

Any further discussion after that, including the fact that we strongly disagree with the position that gay people should not be allowed to marry or even engage in sexual relationships, would have been a mere expression of opinion.

The story has since spread across the internet, with features in publications across Canada and abroad. Bethany Paquette is still awaiting a decision from the BC Human Rights Tribunal on whether she was rejected for being a Christian.
