Raven Symoné To Oprah: ‘I’m Not An African American’
When Raven Symoné sat down with Oprah, she had a lot to get off of her chest. We didn’t expect what she had to say would make headlines, but it seems like the world wasn’t ready for some of the controversial statements made by Symoné.
For instance, Raven complained that she doesn’t want to be labeled period, not in her sexuality, or her race. The former Cosby star declared that she doesn’t see herself as an African American, during her sit down with Oprah.
It started when Oprah asked whether or not she came out to the world in one of her tweets. On August 2, 2013, Raven tweeted, “I can finally get married! Yay government! So proud of you.”
Raven addressed it with an unexpected answer.
“That was my way of saying I’m proud of the country. I’m in an amazing, happy relationship, with a partner, a woman. People in my family, they’ve taught me to keep my personal life to myself as much as possible. So, I try my best to hold the fence where I can.”
In a way to shoot down labels, the television star continued, “I knew when I was, like, 12. I was looking at everything. I don’t want to be labeled ‘gay.’ I want to be labeled ‘a human who loves humans. I’m tired of being labeled. I’m an American. I’m not an African American; I’m an American.”
That’s not the only quote that’s making headlines from Raven’s chat with Oprah. As The Inquisitr reported, she also dissed her former roommate Lindsay Lohan.
When Oprah asked the star how she avoided the pitfalls of Hollywood as a child star, she explained, “Seeing all the child stars going off the edge, what I’ve learned [is] it’s unnecessary to go to the most popular restaurant in the world when you have a scandal on your head and then get mad that someone’s going to take a picture of you. That’s your fault boo boo. Stay in the house.”
That wasn’t the only time she spoke about her former roommate. The star said that Lohan was barely in the apartment they shared together. Symone said, “She paid rent, and she was there probably three times. She had her clothes in the apartment we were supposed to live in together. I really need to squash these rumors because this was when I was 17!”
