Members of the Bell County community are truly saddened by his death. Daniel Crespo is described as a good person who always looked out for the younger people in the community. Maria Rios told SCPR that she had fond memories of him.
“Especially me as a teenager, he always wanted to make sure everything was going fine. He would do a lot of activities for us in the apartments, as a whole family. He was always giving us tickets to go to games, stuff like that.”
Maria Rios is not the only community member with good things to say about Daniel Crespo. The former probation officer, who had a history of working with troubled youth, was said to be a caring person with integrity who always took his job seriously. After working as a probation officer in the early 1990’s, Crespo relocated to Bell Gardens, where he was appointed as a Bell City council member in 2001, later winning the election for Mayor of Bell Gardens.
Mayor Daniel Crespo, 45, married his high school sweetheart Lyvette C. Collazo, 43, in 1986. He leaves behind two children, a son and a daughter. His wife and killer Lyvette Crespo was detained and transported to the Bell Gardens Police Department. Update: She has since been released without being charged, leading many to wonder what life was really like behind closed doors. Was there a history of domestic violence? Could Daniel Crespo have been the aggressor? Did his wife Lyvette tell police that she shot him in self defense?
