Could Avengers 3 Be Split Into Two Films? Age Of Ultron Trailer To Debut With Interstellar?
Avengers: Age of Ultron isn’t even anywhere near hitting theaters, and already, rumors are flying about the third Avengers movie. The latest gossip is a bit of a doozy too, with reports that the third Avengers movie will, in fact, be split into two separate films. Infinity Gauntlet, anyone?
The newest report comes by way of The Daily Marvelite, which cites unnamed sources “[close] to Marvel Studios.” That source says that when Thanos – the Big Bad behind the villains of both the first Avengers movie and this year’s Guardians of the Galaxy – does make his big play on Earth, the battle between him and the Avengers will be so epic that it must be split into two movies.
Marvelite‘s source isn’t too clear on whether Avengers 3 will truly be split into two parts – a la the final film in the Harry Potter series – or if there will simply be an Avengers 4, but that seems to be splitting hairs. Whether you want to call it Avengers 3 and Avengers 3.5 or Avengers 3 and Avengers 4, it looks like Marvel might be pushing out one Avengers movie in May of 2018 and another in May of 2019.
As to what those Avengers movies will contain, it’s likely that we’ve already gotten hints of that already. As Inquisitr has previously reported, it looks like Marvel is building toward a story involving the Infinity Stones – artifacts of immense power that, when assembled, grant their holder omnipotence – with Thanos pulling together all of those powerful items.
It also looks like Marvel will be bringing together the Avengers with the Guardians of the Galaxy in a rock ’em, sock ’em team-up for the ages. Inquisitr has already reported on the claims that the contract of Dave Bautista – who plays the Guardians’ Draxx – stipulates a big role in Avengers 3, but Marvelite pointed out that Vin Diesel – who voices the Guardians’ Groot – has also hinted at an Avengers-Guardians of the Galaxy crossover.
“It’s like a merging of the brands in a way,” Diesel said recently, “which I won’t get into. That was something way, way, way, way, way down the road.”
Sounds like a crossover, no? Of course. There’s no reason for Marvel to introduce the Infinity Stones in the Earth-bound Avengers flicks and the spacefaring Guardians of the Galaxy movie if there was no intention of bringing the two together somehow. That’s Comics 101, right there.
Avengers 3 – be it one movie, two movies, or 12 telepathic holograph projections – is still a long way off, though. We’ve still got to get through next summer, which will see the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron, where Tony Stark creates a villain strong enough to possibly tear the team apart.
If Ultron does succeed in pulling the Avengers apart, we could see Captain America and Iron Man leading separate teams in the wake of Tony’s mistake. That’s in keeping with recent rumors that suggest Captain America 3 will see the Star Spangled Avenger leading his own separate squad, one that could include Hawkeye and the Black Widow.
It’s nigh impossible to accurately call what Marvel will do this far out, but it looks like Avengers fans will get their first glimpse of the future later this year. The first trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron is set to debut alongside Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar when that film hits theaters, according to new reports from FilmPro.
