Monster Truck Deaths: Three Killed When Monster Truck Hits Crowd At Netherlands Demonstration Show
A monster truck hit a crowd of people at a demonstration show in the Netherlands on Sunday. TMZ is reporting that the driver of a monster truck lost control and crashed into a waiting crowd of fans. At least three deaths have been reported. Witnesses say that the show was going as planned in Haaksbergen until the truck performed a trick and smashed into several cars, before hitting several people who had been watching the event. The Daily Mail describes the accident this way.
“After the truck drove over five parked cars. It veered into the watching crowd, careering into dozens of onlookers.”
One witness of the monster truck accident stated the following.
“It was awful to see. It was not too bad in terms of speed. But such truck is so heavy, there is nothing can be done. I think people did not have time to jump away. It was too late. I saw many people lying on the ground, and people running there to help. There were also people under the truck.”
Several spectators captured the accident on their camera phones, while hundreds helplessly watched the events unfold in horror. Dutch medical personnel arrived at the scene, where they found the bodies of three deceased people. The rest were transported to the local hospital to be treated for their injuries.
The town’s mayor told media outlets that one of the three fatalities included a child, and more than a dozen others were injured in the accident. Many are speculating that either the brakes or the gas pedal were faulty, but a clear cause has not been determined. It doesn’t appear that the driver was badly injured in the mash up.
Star Events Foundation Haaksbergen President Geerlorf Kanis stated that officials did everything possible to make sure that the event was safe for both drivers and onlookers.
“Each year there is that kind of stunt, a car or a motorcycle. We ensure that there is always enough space, with a safety margin.”
Monster trucks have been around since the late 1960s but became more popular in the 1980s. The monster trucks are styled after pick-up trucks, but hiked up in the air with large Terra tires, measuring 66?×43?×25? in size. The monster truck events are held all over the world
Monster truck deaths were also reported in 2009 when a small child was killed in Tacoma, Washington. In 2013, a monster truck drove into a crowd of spectators, killing about six people and injuring 40 others. That accident took place in Mexico in the city of Juarez, according to an earlier report by The Inquisitr.
