NBA Commissioner Cancels First Two Weeks Of Regular Season
National Basketball Associations fans who were hoping for a full season are out of luck, NBA Commissioner David Stern announced on Monday that the first two weeks of regular season games have been cancelled.
The cancellation announcement comes after both sides met for more than seven hours but could not come to an agreement regarding the leagues collective bargaining agreement.
Stern announced that 2011-2012 regular season games spanning from Nov. 1 to Nov. 14 have been removed from the current schedule.
According to Stern a “gulf” separates the players union and owner both sides are “very, very far apart on virtually all issues.”
Stern has also announced that the cancelled games will not be made up at the end of the season, meaning an 82-game regular season will not be fully played out.
At this time the NBA Players Union and NBA officials have not setup a future meeting to further discuss the collective bargaining agreement.
The NBA on Monday released the following statement:
The NBA announced today that it has canceled the first two weeks of the 2011-12 regular season because a new collective bargaining agreement has not been reached with the National Basketball Players Association. This cancellation includes all games originally scheduled to be played through November 14.
“Despite extensive efforts, we have not been able to reach a new agreement with the players’ union that allows all 30 teams to be able to compete for a championship while fairly compensating our players,” NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver said.
Refunds plus interest are available for all NBA season-ticket holders for all preseason and regular-season games that are canceled.
