George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin are set to marry in Venice. This detail seems to be certain, not only because of the many media reports that have insisted it is true, but because Clooney himself made the declaration at a recent event . As for more specific details, such as the precise location, date, guests and wedding officiator — those are continuously up for grabs.
Today, Italian media spilled some key information on the Clooney – Alamuddin nuptials. As The Telegraph stated, picking up on the reports out of Italy, the actual event will take place on September 29 as the culmination of three days of celebration . Clooney and Alamuddin’s wedding guests will attend events at a couple of locales, including the Hotel Cipriani and the Hotal Aman. The Cipriani was mentioned over the weekend in media reports about where the pair will officially tie the knot.
While much attention has been paid to the frills that surround the big event, including the bride’s choice of wedding gown designer, little talk before now was devoted to who would perform the ceremony. The Telegraph says it’s the former Mayor of Rome Walter Veltroni, who reportedly applied to Venice City Council to marry Clooney and Alamuddin in a civil ceremony on that late September Monday.
Veltroni and Clooney have been friends since 2007. E! Online calls the politician “Obama’s European counterpart,” who was mayor from 2001 to 2008. The Hollywood Reporter quoted Clooney saying of Veltroni in 2008.
“I consider him to be a great friend, like Obama. Few people rarely have something very special, the ability for leadership, as well as great speaking skills, like Obama. In Veltroni, I felt the same power.”
As Bloomberg reported at the time, Veltroni resigned as mayor in 2008 in order to run for Prime Minister of Italy as leader of the Democratic Party. He faced notable opposition in the person of Silvio Berlusconi.
The Italian media reports are still insisting Alamuddin will wear an Oscar de la Renta dress, despite rumors she may opt for Alexander McQueen. She was recently spotted leaving the McQueen design house and seen chatting with a woman wearing a pin cushion, presumably a seamstress.
E! Online also reported the speculation of celebrity guests, and every famous name long-associated with Clooney seems to have made the list. Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Bono, Ellen Barkin and Sandra Bullock each received a mention. As for Julia Roberts? E! Online says it can confirm she will not be making the trip to the lavish event, wherever and whenever it does occur.
