The Saints and Browns both come into today’s game looking to bounce back from week one losses. Perhaps the main question on people’s minds — or at least on Cleveland Browns and Texas A&M Aggies fans’ minds — is whether we’ll finally get to see Johnny Manziel in action in a regular season game.
It isn’t likely. Brian Hoyer led a close-but-no-cigar comeback last week after the Browns fell behind the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-3 in the first half. Hoyer looked good, completing 19 of 31 for 230 yards and a TD that tied the game with just under 12 minutes to play. The Browns couldn’t seal the deal, and the Steelers ended up winning by a field goal, but Hoyer’s second half almost-heroics were likely enough to keep him in the driver’s seat for now. Don’t expect to see Johnny Football unless the game gets lopsided or Brian Hoyer makes a complete mess of the offense.
If last week is any indication, Hoyer doesn’t have much to worry about from the New Orleans Saints defense. The Saints gave up 448 passing yards and 568 total yards on their way to losing to the Atlanta Falcons in OT.
According to a Yahoo Sports report, Saints defensive tackle Akiem Hicks had this to say about his team bouncing back from last week’s performance:
“We don’t expect to ever lose, especially the first game of the year. So that’s definitely going to touch you and that’s definitely going to make you want to come in the next week and perform better.”
Manziel fans shouldn’t give up hope. The Cleveland Browns have lost eight straight stretching back to last year and are likely to run out of patience if Hoyer doesn’t find a way to put them in the W column sooner rather than later. And even if Hoyer suddenly becomes brilliant, Johnny Football could still sign with the Padres and play baseball.
The New Orleans Saints don’t have to deal with quarterback controversy. Drew Brees is the guy, and barring injury, will be for some time to come. The Saints are 3-1 against the Browns with Drew Brees under center, their sole loss coming in 2010 in New Orleans.
Look for the Saints — still one of the better teams in the NFC — to come back strong today against a Browns team that continues to struggle. You can watch today’s New Orleans Saints vs. Cleveland Browns game streaming online live here starting at 1 P.M. Eastern Standard Time.
