For those unfamiliar with NASCAR’s new Chase format, the 16 drivers who qualified for the chase will be driving specially marked cars. Viewers will be able to see tell which drivers are in the Chase easily by the distinctive yellow numbers and markings on their cars. The next three races comprise the Challenger Round. Twelve drivers will advance to the next round after three races. Each Chase driver who wins a race during the Challenger Round will advance automatically. The rest of the field of 12 will be filled out by Chase-qualified drivers who have earned the most points in these three races. All qualified drivers points reset to zero after the Challenger round (and after each subsequent round of the Chase for the Cup).

Neither Danica Patrick nor Tony Stewart or Stewart-Haas racing finished the season with a win or with the points to qualify for the Chase, but both will be running hard after their first win of the season (and in Danica Patrick’s case, her first win ever) after a disappointing regular season. Stewart is starting in the 22nd position and Danica Patrick will be starting 18th.
