‘Dracula Untold’ New International Trailer Stars Luke Evans As Vlad The Impaler [Video]
Dracula Untold has a new international trailer starring Luke Evans (The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Fast & Furious 6) as Vlad the Impaler (Count Dracula). Despite what the title suggests, this is not a horror movie, but a story of love and loyalty, and what a desperate man will do to protect his family.
Dracula is the daddy of all vampires and you may have seen countless versions of the story in the past, but this is unlike anything we have ever witness. First of, the legendary bloodsucker is not a pasty looking creature, but a young, handsome, very devoted man, who is put in an impossible position. If the trailer is any indication, we are in for an amazing display of special effects when Dracula Untold flies into theaters next month.
We will basically see Luke Evans take the character from it’s origins and understand why he became the haunted vampire we know him to be. In Dracula Untold we see Vlad fight his enemies — who want to take his family away from him — and in the process make a deal that will turn him into Dracula.
The Dracula Untold plot is based on Bram Stoker’s novel, which was inspired by the story of Vlad Tepes (the Impaler), according to film producer Alissa Phillips, who spoke to Screenrant about Universal’s new take on a familiar character:
“Now the writers Matt (Sazama) and Burke (Sharpless) six years ago decided, how did he become that? How did he get to Dracula in the 1800s? So it was their idea to do an origins tale, very much in the vein of the films we see now. This was their idea, they are brand new writers, they weren’t inspired by anything else, they just wondered how he became Dracula. So they went back to the reign of Vlad III and that’s where our story starts in the 1400s. When you meet Vlad he’s a good king, he’s a good ruler, he’s married to a wonderful woman, Merina, played by Sarah Gadon, he has a loving son, Ingeras, played by Art Parkinson, his land is at peace – it’s what we call Transylvania in the film, it was Wallachia then, modern day Romania. His land is at peace but that peace, as we learn in Act I as it unfolds, is a tenuous peace. Basically he’s been able to keep his land and his people safe by paying tribute to the Ottomans and Turks, Sultan Mehmed II, and our film is all based on history. The writers did tons and tons of research and in many ways and in many places it lines up with what we believe was the case. Sometimes in incredibly specific ways.”
In the new Dracula Untold international trailer we see more of what Vlad, played by Welsh actor Luke Evans is facing and how he plans to keep his wife and son safe. But Vlad — who is 30 when we meet him — has a dark past that is closely tied to Mehmed II (Dominic Cooper) and it will come back to haunt him, when the Sultan demands to take 1,000 boys for his army, including the Impaler’s own son. He refuses and that is when tragedy strikes, however, Vlad is not your everyday human anymore, he has special powers.
