Kathy Bates shared a sweet memory of Robin Williams while backstage at the Emmy Awards on Monday night. According to Hollywood Life , the actress had just won an Emmy for her role on American Horror Story when she decided to talk about a fond moment that she had at the Golden Globes with Williams many moons ago.
As previously reported by The Inquisitr , Bates was very surprised when her name was read off of the Emmy card. She won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for her role as infamous serial killer, Madame Delphine LaLaurie.
“Years and years ago when I won my first big award for ‘Misery,’ a Golden Globe, they didn’t have cell phones in those days. So, I was waiting at a pay phone to call my Mom and I realized I didn’t have a quarter… Robin stepped up and said ‘here’s a quarter to call your mother.’
I never forgot that kindness and then years later when I was up for an Oscar… Dame Judi Dench won and at the commercial break he came over to me and he said ‘Oh I really wished I could’ve had your name in the envelope. Are you okay? I know how hard it is to lose.’
He was just so kind to me. I didn’t know him well, but he was so kind. So this is a special night for that reason. I almost wanted to say ‘look, I won this time, and this is for you.’”
Kathy Bates was clearly getting choked up as she told reporters about the first time that she met Robin Williams. It is clear that he touched her heart with just a simple gesture, and she will keep that memory close forever. Those who knew Robin best have said nothing but wonderful things about the man that most of us only knew from the movies he was in. It’s almost comforting knowing that so many of his friends truly loved him.
Perhaps Billy Crystal said it best during his heartfelt tribute . “He was the greatest friend you could ever imagine,” he said, keeping things as positive as possible as to not breakdown on the Emmy stage. According to The Daily News , the tribute wasn’t an easy thing for Crystal, who was completely devastated following the news that Robin Williams had committed suicide.
