Matt Damon Uses Toilet Water To Complete The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge – Here’s Why!
Matt Damon takes the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge – with toilet water?
Yes, you read that correctly! Matt Damon was nominated for the Ice Bucket Challenge by his childhood friend, Ben Affleck, and long-time rival Jimmy Kimmel.
Instead of just focusing on the neurological condition ALS, Matt used this viral challenge to raise awareness for the poor sanitation problems and lack of clean water in other parts of the world. As the founder of Water.Org, one of his own personal missions and charitable goals in recent years has been to shine a spotlight on the fact that over 800 million people around the world do not have direct access to clean water.
Therefore, Matt Damon filled up a bucket of ice with toilet water that he collected from all of the toilets throughout his home to take this challenge.
As he was collecting the water, Matt Damon expressed his reasons for taking so long to complete the challenge and how he battled with an internal conflict in reference to it:
[The challenge] posed kind of a problem for me, not only because there is a drought here in California but also I co-founded Water.org and we envision a day when everybody has access to clean drinking water… so putting a clean bucket of water on my head seemed a little crazy
The concept of dumping toilet water in a bucket onto your head might quickly turn your stomach. Don’t worry! In the video, Matt Damon admits that even his own wife was disgusted by the idea of him taking the “road less traveled” to complete this challenge. However, Matt then brought up an interesting and enlightening point that helped to put things into perspective:
Keep in mind that the water in our toilets in the west is actually cleaner than the water that most people in the developing world has access to.
After dumping the water on his head, the shock of how cold the water was after it touched his body completely threw Matt Damon off. If it wasn’t for his wife reminding him, he would have forgotten to nominate other people to take the challenge since he passed it.
Once he took a moment to regain his composure, he nominated three of his favorite celebrities — George Clooney (favorite actor), Bono (favorite musician) and Tom Brady (favorite athlete). Matt Damon even took his admiration of Tom Brady to new heights by calling him “the greatest quarterback of all time.” Matt Damon taking this approach to completing the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge with actual toilet water instead of clean water has definitely made a huge impact on others, which is clearly proven by the many tweets that have been posted since the video was first released, such as:

Who knows? Maybe each of the people that Matt Damon nominated will use toilet water to complete the challenge as well – especially since George Clooney and Bono are both very passionate about their own charitable causes to improve conditions around the world as well.
It is true that Tom Brady has already taken the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. However, perhaps Matt Damon adding the fact that he is “the greatest quarterback of all time” will inspire Tom Brady to fill up a bucket of his own toilet water and take the challenge again.
