Dunkin Donuts Introduces Coffee Donuts

Just in case a cup of Dunkin Donuts’ much-heralded coffee isn’t enough on an early Monday morning, now you can get an extra jolt with a coffee-flavored donut.

According to Fox News, the Massachusetts-based chain is introducing two new treats:

Made from the coffee chain's signature blend, the Glazed Coffee Creme donut is a glazed shell filled with coffee buttercream and topped with a drizzle of chocolate icing. The Coffee, Creme & Sugar Donut is also made with a glazed shell stuffed with coffee butter creme and topped with powdered sugar.

It might be part of a ramped-up battle for your hard-earned food-and-beverage dollars. We reported last month that Krispy Kreme was adding several new menu items in a bid to parlay its popular donuts into a consumer base for other goodies. That was in part a reaction to other coffee-and-pastry chains like Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts moving into breakfast and lunch offerings.

But Dunkin’ Donuts is taking a page out of the Krispy Kreme playbook now, since the competitor offered coffee donuts earlier this year.

According to Fox News,

Our consensus is that it's much like coffee with a lot of cream and sugar inside, and the texture of the cream filling is almost like cake frosting.

A statement released by Dunkin’ Donuts last week also announced new “sweeter, creamier” Swirl coffees in French Vanilla and Hazelnut flavors as well as a chicken biscuit sandwich in New York.

But it’s the glazed and sugared coffee donuts that are getting the attention, as “the brand’s first donuts made with Dunkin’ Donuts’ famous Original Blend Coffee.”

It is National Coffee Month, as the Salisbury Post notes, so all the more reason for Dunkin’ Donuts to double-dip in their well-known coffee. But National Coffee Day, when several chains offer free coffee specials, isn’t until September 29.

Northern Californians will finally be able to join in the caffeine-filled donuts, too. Dunkin’ Donuts also announced this month that its first store in the region will open in Modesto on August 26, complete with a “California-inspired donut.” That store is the first of what the company said earlier this year will be 46 new locations in Sacramento, Stockton, and Modesto.

Dunkin’ Donuts (DNKN) stock was down slightly, to $43.40 on Friday in after-hours trading, and last month Janney Capital downgraded their advice on the stock from Buy to Neutral after dropping their target price to $45 from $56. Time will tell if adding their much-hailed coffee to their donuts will boost their sales as well.
