Brittney Griner Is Getting Hitched
Brittney Griner was once known as the woman who was able to dunk a basketball at Baylor University. Brittney has come a long ways from those days, becoming one of the top WNBA players in the league. Now that Griner has managed that feat, she’s taking on another role.
Brittney announced on Friday that she has become engaged to her longtime girlfriend and Griner will be walking down the aisle next year.
While most people are talking about how an openly gay athlete is going to affect the locker room in the NBA, NFL, and major league baseball, the WNBA is a league that already has plenty of openly gay athletes.
Griner and her now fiance Glory Johnson are just two of several who are still actively playing in the league. Brittney and Glory are being allowed to play in the league without having to answer questions on an almost daily basis about their sexuality, and it has allowed Brittney and players like her to live and love out loud.
Griner, who plays for the Phoenix Mercury, announced her engagement to the Tulsa Shock’s Johnson the way many a celebrity has done it before. Brittney Griner took to Instagram in order to show off the good news and the ring, according to The Huffington Post.
Griner actually posted a picture of her popping the question with the caption, “Last Night was a Night to Remember. I became the happiest person on this earth! (almost pass out but when that one word came out I came back to life) Me and my baby @missvol25 are in it for Life.”
Brittney’s soon to be spouse shared the news with her followers on Instagram with another picture that seems to show just how much love Griner and Johnson have for one another.
It should be pointed out that neither Brittney or Glory have been all that shy about sharing their feelings for each other; both Instagram profiles are covered in photos of the happy couple smiling broadly together.
While the former Baylor standout has embraced her role as a prominent gay athlete, she hasn’t always been completely embraced by some in the gay community.
Since coming out last year, the superstar has written a book which some have claimed shows she wants to exploit her standing in the gay community. Despite these detractors Brittney Griner seems plenty comfortable in her own skin and that is only a good thing.
