Earlier this week a person dressed as Gumby – yes, you read that correctly – walked into a Southern California 7-Eleven, claiming to have a gun and demanding money, but his efforts failed, in part because the clerk couldn’t take him seriously.
Footage from the Rancho Penasquitos store’s surveillance cameras show the green-clay-giant costumed would-be robber enter the store with another man – who wasn’t dressed as Pokey – and approach the clerk.
After asking for a pack of cigarettes, police say that Gumby then told the clerk he was robbing the place. However, instead of emptying the cash register, the clerk, thinking the man was playing a prank, responded that he didn’t have time and that he had to clean.
Following being dismissed on his initial attempt, Gumby reportedly then said he had a gun and fumbled around in his costume, appearing to search for it.
Although a gun never materialized, the costumed bandit did drop 27 cents on the floor as a result of all the movement before leaving the store with his unidentified accomplice.
While the foiled robbery attempt is attracting laughs more than anything else, Police say the matter is nothing to scoff at.
“Yeah, it’s hilarious to look at it on the video, but it is a very serious crime, and we take it very seriously,” San Diego police Detective Gary Hassen told local reporters.
“It could have been a ski mask. It could have been a bandana. It could have been a hoodie. It just happens to be a Gumby costume,” he added.
San Diego Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Gumby and/or the accomplice. They describe the get away car as a light-colored mini-van.
