‘The Last Of Us’ Only Scratched The Surface Of PS4’s Capabilities, ‘Uncharted 4’ Will Show Clear Progression

The Last of Us: Remastered was released by Sony and Naughty Dog to the Playstation 4 this past week. The visuals of the action-adventure game are a vast improvement over the PS3 version, but there’s still much more that the console is capable of doing, according to the developer.

“I think we’re just scratching the surface,” Naughty Dog Community Strategist Arne Meyer told Metro UK. “Obviously this isn’t our first game that’s been developed purely for the PS4, so I think for us this is a great proof of concept that, ‘Here’s the first foundation of how good we can do it and how far we can push it’. And that’s without doing something that’s made ground-up for the PS4.”

In fact, Naughty Dog had to restrain itself somewhat when it came to the visual improvements for The Last of Us: Remastered. “[T]here’s things that our particle effects artist wanted to change on the visual side that actually affected our game design systems – so we couldn’t do that,” Arne explained. “So, there is a knock-down effect on all of that. It’s like once you start realizing how intrinsically linked everything is then you’re like, ‘Yeah, let’s not touch that’ because who knows how many other things that will affect.”

The Last of Us was already considered one the best games of 2013 for the Playstation 3 thanks not only to its emotional storyline, but also because it was easily one of the best looking games on the console. It surpassed previous Naughty Dog efforts with the Uncharted series, which steadily improved over the course of three games on the console.

Naturally, this means that Uncharted 4 will look even better, right? Arne says yes but it may be hard notice because we are reaching the upper limits of what can be accomplished with gaming graphics.

“[I]t’s always been hard to quantify because it’s so extremely relative to everything else,”Arne noted when asked about how hard it is to quantify next-gen graphical improvements. “And with some things we’re actually reaching the limit of your eye anyway, which is crazy. But I think when you look at the way that our games have improved from game to game, there is a clear progression there and I think you can expect that as you continue development on the PS4.”

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is currently scheduled to be released sometime in 2015 for the PS4. The first trailer for the game was released at E3 2014 in June and we can expect to see more at Gamescom starting on August 11.
