‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Secret Ending: How The End Credits Scene And Infinity Stones Affect ‘Avengers 2’

The Guardians Of The Galaxy secret ending during the end credits scenes will probably have you scratching your head, especially if you don’t recognize Howard the Duck or that dog in the space suit. But since Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 has already been announced, we can make some guesses on what everything else means.

In a related report by The Inquisitr, the Guardians of the Galaxy end credits scene was already leaked prior to the release date of the movie:

“The end-credits scene opens with The Collector, Taneleer Tavan, played by Benicio del Toro bandaged up and sitting amongst the remains of his ‘collection’ after the Guardians paid him a visit in the film. Cosmo, the Russian space dog he previously had in his collection comes up and licks The Collector’s bandaged face, and then we hear a voice speaking. The camera shifts and we see Howard the Duck in his now-shattered glass pen, equally unkempt and battle weary, sipping a space martini.”

But what does that all mean? Writer James Gunn answered that question when he was asked about the possibility of a Howard the Duck movie.

Guardians Of The Galaxy 2

What the Guardians of the Galaxy secret ending may tell us the most about the sequel is the existence of Cosmo the space dog, who is the head of security on Knowhere. In the comics, Cosmo aids the Guardians, so it’s possible Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 may feature the space canine.

We can also guess that the alien father of Peter Quill (aka Star-Lord) will also become a primary subject, or at least a side-plot in the sequel. This is not just a guess because that’s what James Gunn actually said in an interview:

“I know a lot of where I want to go. I have a lot of ideas for stories and characters that are going to appear, and there are documents written up, that some people have, about Peter Quill’s father and his relationship, a lot of stuff about Yondu and a lot of stuff about Drax that nobody knows… Kevin Feige has stuff. I wrote up a lot. He knows all the stuff and if I died tomorrow they could go make a movie. They could write the story of Peter Quill’s father and it would all be there. I think Yondu is a very important character, a really important character in this universe, and I think Nebula is really important too and so I think we’ll see more of both of those characters.”

In the comics the father of Star-Lord was not powerful or special, although it’s possible the movies will change the story to make his father be someone of note.

Avengers 2

While it was not part of the Guardians Of The Galaxy secret ending, the official introduction and explanation of the Infinity Stones sets the stage for future Marvel movie sequels. The company has already announced eight future titles, but only four of them have been named (but do check out our article on the leaked images of possible titles for the other four). It’s speculated this is because Marvel themselves have not yet decided the actual plot or focus for some of the planned movies, but we do know one overarching theme.

The Infinity Stones are six magical space rocks that bestow a particular power to the holder. If all of them are gathered together and put into the Infinity Gauntlet then you essentially have god-like powers. The character of Thanos was also introduced in The Avengers secret ending but became more prominent in Guardians of the Galaxy, although only as the master manipulator pulling the strings from afar. Ronan the Accuser was operating as an agent for Thanos in order to gather the Infinity Stones together, which will set up the final battle.

Marvel has already stated they view Thanos as an “end boss” to all these movies, so it’s likely the Infinity Gauntlet will eventually become the focus of a future movie. Since the Avengers 2 release date is next year, and focuses on Ultron, that probably means Thanos won’t become a primary villain until Avengers 3, although I wouldn’t be surprised if Ultron has possession of yet another Infinity Stone.
