Ballerina Misty Copeland Surely Motivates And Empowers To ‘Will What One Wants’ [VIDEO]
When it comes to the world of ballet, it has been pigeon-holed as a form of dance that only certain people would acquire a liking for, both for visual enjoyment and participation (if they were to do so). However, Misty Copeland is starting to pave the way of a new era in which ballet is now opening up to a wider audience. Here on The Inquisitr, we reported how Copeland is a trailblazer who wanted to add more diversity in the ballet world. With her popularity increasing, it is now possible.
Now reports are coming in of Misty Copeland’s first commercial signed on through the American Ballet Theater (ABT) and being a spokesperson for Under Armour… and it is very inspiring as it expresses “I WILL WHAT I WANT”.
In an article by Health, the article explains how Misty Copeland is being promoted through Under Armour. Utilizing the fact that Copeland is the third African-American soloist in the ABT’s history, helps sell the product as well as showcasing her sinewy body during a warm-up. What really sells the product is a girl’s voice reading a rejection letter in the background that goes:
“Dear candidate. Thank you for your application to our ballet academy. Unfortunately, you have not been accepted. You lack the right feed, Achilles tendons, turnout, torso length, and bust. You have the wrong body for ballet. And at 13, you are too old to be considered.”
The reading of this rejection letter is very important because Misty Copeland began her ballet training at the age of 13. Within months, she was on pointe and heralded as a prodigy. After going pro, she was injured and hit puberty at the same time along with trying to conform for the ideal ballet body, something that led to binge eating. Soon, she landed the soloist spot at ABT
Another article by Huffington Post explains the importance of Misty Copeland’s spokesperson role with Under Armour because the athletic-clothing company is synonymous with masculinity, primarily American football clothing. Copeland, along with Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn, tennis player Sloane Stephens, and soccer star Kelley O’Hara, are all part of Under Armour’s I WILL WHAT I WANT promotion, which “celebrates the will to find inner strength and to follow no one.”
We want to now hear from all of you! Did Misty Copeland’s new commercial inspire or was it lacking? Did Under Armour hit the ball out of the park with this new direction, or should they stick with “masculine” clothing? Let us know in the comments below.
