Nicole Richie spoke with Oprah Winfrey recently, and no topic was off limits. The 32-year-old daughter of Lionel Richie told the billionaire talk show queen about the worst part of being married to Joel Madden. She also spoke about the best part of being married to Madden. Here’s the catch. They are both the same. It all has to do with their views on divorce, parenthood and what it takes to build a healthy family.
The celebrity couple is happily married, which is a rarity in show business. Nicole Richie admitted that a successful marriage takes work, and it is a conscious decision. That’s why she and Madden sat down together for a serious discussion upon learning that she was pregnant with their first child, daughter Harlow, who is now six years old.
According to E! Online , Oprah Winfrey asked Nicole Richie “… about the best and worst part about being married to the Good Charlotte rocker,” and Richie had a rather enlightening response. It seems that the Candidly Nicole star and her 35-year-old rock star husband both have divorced parents, and they made a conscious decision to work together “as a team.”
“We met and we were partners from day one. And from the second we found out we were going to parents together, we looked at each other and we said, ‘Okay, both of our parents are divorced. We both have had ups and downs with our parents and we don’t really have a strong example of what a healthy family life is. But, we’re recognizing that now, so let’s work at it and let’s go through this together as a team.’ It’s been great, and I would say that’s the easiest and hardest part.”
As reported by The Inquisitr , Joel Madden begged Nicole Richie to date him. So it doesn’t exactly sound like they were partners from the moment they met, but it’s sweet to hear Richie feels that way. It’s even sweeter that they started as friends, and their friendship blossomed into a beautiful relationship.
Richie and Madden began dating in 2006, according to Us Weekly . They have been married for three and a half years, since 2010. Their children are six and four. So they have had plenty of time to work on the healthy family dynamic they both lacked as children, even though Nicole Richie admitted to Oprah, “There’s always room for improvement.”
