Liam Neeson Opens Up On Wife Natasha Richardson’s Tragic Death

It feels like just yesterday we were hearing about the tragic death of actress Natasha Richardson. For her husband, actor Liam Neeson, the pain still seems very fresh. In prior interviews, Neeson admitted that her death had been on his mind so much that it stopped him from taking on the role of Abraham Lincoln, which Daniel Day-Lewis won an Academy Award for.

For Neeson, the loss doesn’t feel real on some days. The actor opened up on the experience of losing his wife to a ski accident that left the actress with a traumatic brain injury.

Tragedy hasn’t always been a main point in the actor’s life but now Liam is suffering another blow as his 31-year-old nephew was involved in an accident when he fell from a telephone box. He’s currently in critical condition.

The actor opened up to Loaded Magazine and said that even though the tragedy happened five years ago, that doesn’t make it seem any more real.

At the time of her accident, he had to keep Natasha’s promise to not linger on a decision after she was left in a vegetative state. He explained the difficult situation this left him in.

“She was on life support…I went in to her and I told her I loved her, said ‘Sweetie, you’re not coming back from this, you’ve banged your head’…she and I had made a pact, if any of us got into a vegetative state that we’d pull the plug…that was my immediate thought…’Okay, these tubes have to go. She’s gone’.”

Although it’s been four years since the actress’ death, Liam has said that her death hits him like “a wave” and that he is still working through his grief. On some days he doesn’t exactly feel stable.

“It hits you. It’s like a wave. You just get this profound feeling of instability. The earth isn’t stable any more and then it passes. It becomes more infrequent, but I still get it sometimes.”

The actor continued:

“There’s periods now when I hear the door opening, especially the first couple of years… anytime I hear that door opening, I still think I’m going to hear her.”

Even though her death was incredibly tragic, it seems like there’s at least some relief for the Taken actor. Richardson was an organ donor, which has given her death as well as her life a greater purpose. Her organs are currently keeping three people alive.
