Guardians of the Galaxy represents Marvel’s riskiest take on its comic book universe yet, but the dividends are already paying off. The yet to be released film is already sitting at the 100 percent fresh on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes , and co-writer Nicole Perlman confirmed that a sequel is already on the way.
“They started to figure it out pretty quick when they started getting the reactions from the audience; it was a very positive reaction,” Perlman told TheWrap during an interview at 2014 San Diego Comic-Con. “Of course they would want to make a sequel as long as it does well and people are excited about it, they’ll want to do a sequel. So, it’s going to happen.”
Perlman also confirmed that director and co-writer James Gunn will return to fill both of the roles, though there’s no guarantee that she will be back right now. She wrote the initial script for Guardians of the Galaxy before the Slither and Super director was brought on board and put his own stamp on it.
Guardians of the Galaxy had its world premiere in Los Angeles and London this week with stars Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Karen Gilan (Nebula), Michael Rooker (Yondu), and more all in attendance.
The summer 2014 box office take for Hollywood has been a disappointing one so far with Entertainment Weekly pointing out that it is on track to have the worst ticket sales in decades. The buzz for Guardians of the Galaxy is possibly as high as it can get for a brand new film that takes a sharp deviation from the its fellow Marvel movies by heading into outer space with a group of anti-heroes and strange aliens.
