Ed Sheeran officially has the top album of 2014 in the UK.
It’s no secret that Sheeran has a very devoted following all around the world. A quick look through The Inquisitr shows that Ed gets quite a bit of coverage these days, even when the story itself isn’t particularly interesting. Not surprisingly, all of this attention helped Sheeran move more than a few copies of his latest release.
According to BBC News , Ed Sheeran’s album X (aka Multiply ) is the UK’s most popular album of 2014 . There’s always a chance someone might release a record which could dethrone Sheeran before the year wraps up, but for the moment he’s at the top of the pile. The singer’s fans wouldn’t have it any other way.
The Official Charts Company said in a recent statement :
“‘X’ became the fastest selling artist album of 2014 so far up on its release last month, with more than 182,000 sales during its first week on sale. Today it becomes the longest running Number 1 of the year to date, overtaking Paolo Nutini’s three week stand at the chart’s summit back in April with ‘Caustic Love.’”
As of this writing, Ed Sheeran has sold an impressive 367,000 copies of his latest record since its release last month. Not only has the singer scored a major hit in the UK, he’s also moving quite a few copies of the record in the U.S. According to Sheeran, Taylor Swift is wholly responsible for his Stateside success.
The songwriter recently explained :
“She owns the U.S. pop scene. She knows how to do it. In England I was a commercially successful artist, but coming into the U.S. as an alternative artist playing shows with Snow Patrol. She not only opened the door into the pop world but showed me how to do it.”
Billboard previously reported that Ed Sheeran sold an extremely healthy 210,000 copies during its first week on the charts. As of this writing, the record is presently perched at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Everything is coming up Sheeran in 2014.
