‘Sinister Six’ Movie Canceled? Mysterious Tweet Suggests Grim Future For ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’ Spinoff

The Sinister Six movie may be canceled, but we don’t know for sure. The grim rumor has begun thanks to a mysterious tweet from entertainment news writer Umberto Gonzalez.

Why would the Amazing Spider-Man 2 spinoff’s future suddenly be laid to rest? It could be the result of the box office from the Andrew Garfield, Jamie Foxx, and Emma Stone blockbuster. The film hasn’t even hit Blu-ray and DVD yet, but it under-performed enough that Sony may be thinking twice about the series.

The answer might lie with Marvel Studios, whose Avengers franchise has been such a top seller that rivals Fox and Sony simply have to pull out all of the stops and make each film a must-see or just give Marvel the license out of sheer failure.

While Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man 3 performance was cringe-worthy, and X-Men: The Last Stand was directed straight into the bargain bins, Marvel’s Avengers films have only proven a success. The only relative weak points in the Avengers franchise were Iron Man 3 and the first two attempts at a Hulk movie . The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was literally the lowest earning film of Sony’s series, indicating that audiences actually preferred a dancing “emo” Peter Parker to the final battle with Electro.

Could Sony be realizing that they’re better off planning one film at a time? Plans for the Sinister Six movie were certainly ambitious, but performance was seriously under par last time and they may be getting more cautious.

Is the ‘Sinister Six’ movie canceled? Mysterious tweet raises questions about ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ spinoff.

There were no reasons and no explanation given for the possible cancellation of the Sinister Six movie, so it could simply be Gonzalez jumping to conclusions based on insider rumors we never heard. The only fact we know for now is that Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the lowest grossing film in the franchise.

If Sony’s franchise can’t recover from the lackluster earnings of the last few films, it could be only a matter of time before Spider-Man ends up making more than a possible cameo in a future Avengers film. Even Warner Bros. is feeling the pressure from the competition, though they have the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy and the re-imagined Man of Steel as a launch point for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice .

Marvel’s position with Disney could be why their films are such a success, but it’s the audience who ultimately decides what gets a series and what gets canceled. The audience has apparently shown they aren’t ready to accept the new Spider-Man , and as a result the Sinister Six movie may be dead before it can even get started.

It’s just a rumor based on a tweet, and until we hear it from Sony, that’s all it is.
