Firefighter Saves Dog By Giving CPR, Brings Chihuahua Back To Life

After a harrowing blaze engulfed a woman’s RV, a Texas firefighter saves a dog by giving her CPR. The Addison firefighter, Capt. Scott Ledet, is lauded a K-9 hero for bringing a nearly dead chihuahua back to life.

Yvette Childers noticed while driving her RV earlier this month, that the the engine caught on fire and flames took over the cab, NBCDFW.com reports. Childers escaped the vehicle, but her 1-year-old chihuahua, Pony, was trapped inside.

“I’m standing there watching it burn and I’m thinking, ‘Oh my god, that dog,'” Childers said.

Childers told firefighters about her dog as soon as they arrived and they proceeded to do what they could, using hatchets to get inside the burning RV.

Childers tells People magazine:

“I told them, ‘I don’t care about anything in it, you guys save that dog.”

That’s when Ledet came in. He wasn’t sure she was even alive. He says she was at the very back of the crate, lying on her side. Although her eyes remained open, she appeared totally lifeless to him. The firefighter explains:

“I took off my helmet and mask off and removed her from her cage and just started doing CPR on her like I would a human. I actually spread her mouth open and put my lips down to the bottom of her throat and was giving her mouth-to-mouth resuscitation that way.”

It took between 25 and 30 minutes of giving CPR, chest compressions, and oxygen before the dog started responding. Pony had a seizure then managed to gasp for air and blink her eyes. In an hour, she was on her feet.

Childers doesn’t think she could have handled it if her beloved dog died in the fire. She expressed her gratitude to the firefighter who saved her dog:

“I’m so glad you were there because I couldn’t have taken it. You can lose everything, but not the little animal.”

Capt. Ledet is a dog lover himself, and he says he “never thought twice about not performing CPR on the dog. It was never a question.”

The charred RV was also Yvette Childers’ home. She lost most of her possessions and is looking for a new place to live. The American Red Cross is helping her with that. Her friends have also set up a GoFundMe page.

In spite of losing the RV, she’s just happy that Pony is alive and still with her.

“I call her the luckiest little miracle dog,” Childers said.

When a police officer or firefighter saves a dog from tragedy, it’s the kind of story animal lovers love to hear about. A related Inquisitr article here is about police officer who shut down highway traffic to save a small dog.
