Mike Boyer: Man First To Buy Legal Weed In Spokane Gets Fired After Being Seen On TV
Mike Boyer, a Washington man who was the very first person in Spokane to purchase legal marijuana, said he was fired from his work at Labor Ready after being seen on TV. According to reports, Boyer was spotted on TV by a customer who recognized him and complained to the Labor Ready manager, who ordered him to do a urine test.
According to Fox, Boyer took Tuesday off and waited for almost a whole day outside Green Leaf before the weed store even opened. After 20 hours of waiting, at around 2 pm, Boyer went in, bought four grams of Sour Kush, and became the very first customer in Spokane to purchase legal marijuana. TV crews from different media outlets were able to cover Boyer making the historical purchase while CNN was even able to accompany Boyer to his house to make his first smoke.
However, 30 minutes later, Boyer learned that he was fired from his position as a security guard for Labor Ready due to the publicity he received from the purchase. He said:
“As of 2:30 today, I am unemployed from that company,”
According to Boyer, someone discovered him purchasing marijuana on TV and reported him to the manager of Labor Ready, who called him to take a drug test within 24 hours. Boyer failed the test, and as consequence, was allegedly fired from his position. He said:
“It’s something we’re going to need to figure out with this whole legalization, where’s going to be the grey line.”
Boyer, who has worked for Labor Ready as a security guard for 12 years, expressed dismay over his dismissal. Boyer told the Daily News:
“I’ve worked for them on and off for 12 years and several years ago, I signed a document that said I wouldn’t have (THC) in my system. I don’t smoke at work! It’s the first day, who’s not gonna run down? People who hadn’t smoked since the 70s and 80s were coming down just to be there. It was the day of days.”
He added that although his dismissal saddened him, he remains happy because of his new title in the weed circles of Spokane:
“I don’t regret it. I’m sad it happened but I got the title: I’m No. 1. I regret nothing.”
Mike Boyer, freshly unemployed, has posted his resume on Craigslist, hoping to get a new job at a new company. Boyer desires to be employed in the marijuana industry, according to reports.
