Pink Floyd to Release New Album in October
Pink Floyd, the legendary rock band that created The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon, will release a new album of new material, called The Endless River, this fall, according to David Gilmour’s wife, Polly Samson. Samson tweeted the information earlier today, and Billboard picked up the story shortly thereafter. The material is said to include work from sessions that late Pink Floyd keyboardist, Richard Wright, laid down in the early ’90s. David Gilmore and Nick Mason have taken those sessions, known to Pink Floyd fans as “The Big Spliff” and turned them into an entire album. There is no word on if long time Pink Floyd bassist, Roger Waters, will make an appearance on the record.
Waters has been busy with his own rumored solo album, and with his charity work for wounded veterans.
The tweet from Samson coincides with an earlier Facebook post by professional back up singer, Durga McBroom-Hudson, who posted that she was working on the new Pink Floyd record, and even included a picture of her being directed by Gilmour himself. The Facebook post was released by consequenceofsound.net, as they have confirmed the story.
Pink Floyd fansite, Floydian Slip added that sound engineer Andy Jackson confirmed the rumor.
It is the extrapolation of the ‘Big Spliff,'” Jackson explained, referencing Gilbour’s scrapped project of ambient music. “A bunch of jams from ‘The Div(ision) Bell” sessions that have had new overdubs done in the last year or so.” Floydian Slip adds that an official announcement could come on Monday.
The new album marks the first new album of Pink Floyd material since 1994’s The Division Bell. Richard Wright, 65, died in 2008 after a long battle with cancer, and any hope of new material went with him. Until now. As Polly Samson says in her tweet:
Btw Pink Floyd album out in October is called ‘The Endless River.’ Based on 1994 sessions is Rick Wright’s swansong and very beautiful.”
Polly Samson worked as a co-writer on much of the Division Bell album. Even as the spouse of David Gilmour, Samson is reportedly in hot water over the tweet, as reported by entertainment wise.com.
Until there is concrete information released by Pink Floyd themselves, this is still all just rumor, but with international media picking it up and people close to the principles of the band, i.e. Samson, the rumor mill is exploding with excitement. The new Pink Floyd album will reportedly hit stores in October.
