Dave Gilliland starts today’s Coke Zero 400 at the pole position, with Reed Sorenson next to him in the second position. Landon Cassill and Bobby Labonte make up the next row in positions two and three, with Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth rounding out the front three rows in positions five and six.
The driver everyone will have their eyes on today, however, is sDale Earnhardt Jr. Everyone is waiting to see if he can make his way from the seventh position, where he’s starting, to take the checkered flag and complete the coveted Daytona Double.
Dale Jr. won NASCAR Sprint Cup’s premier event, passing up his famous father with a second Daytona 500 win to start the season this year. He’s been on a tear, winning two races and finishing in the top five nine times and the top ten in every race except the Duck Commander 500. Dale Jr. left that race early after a car fire. He’s also made time this year to race basketball legend Charles Barkley (in case you hadn’t heard, they split a pair of races and Junior made headlines saying Sir Charles wasn’t “turrible”). Junior is tied with Jimmie Johnson – who starts today’s Coke Zero 400 at Daytona in the fifth position – for second in the points standings, 24 points behind Jeff Gordon, who is starting today’s NASCAR race in the ninth position.
If Dale Earnhardt Jr. can pull off a win in today’s race, he will become only the sixth NACAR driver to pull off the Daytona Double (winning both the Daytona 500 and the Coke Zero 400). Previous Daytona Double winners include Fireball Roberts (1962), Cale Yarborough (1968), LeeRoy Yarbrough (1969), Bobby Allison (1982) and defending Coke Zero 400 champ Jimmie Johnson (2013)
Of course, the NASCAR Coke Zero 400 -Daytona’s summer race, previously known by a number of other names – has a long and storied history for new drivers winning their first races, so make sure to keep a close eye on the likes of Austin Dillon, Danica Patrick and a host of other drivers who have yet to make it to victory lane. Notable drivers who won their first NASCAR race at the Daytona summer race include A.J Foyt, John Andretti, David Ragan and Greg Biffle.
