WWE News: Roman Reigns Vs Brock Lesnar For WWE World Heavyweight Title Set For WrestleMania 31?
In a major update to WWE plans, it seems that the company truly wants to push WWE contender Roman Reigns into super-stardom. Clearly with John Cena getting older, there is a move to really try and find a new top guy.
Sadly, the issue has always been that when a new star is found, he is either too old or injury prone. WWE pushed Daniel Bryan, but the issue is that he cannot wrestle potentially until the end of 2014. That leaves WWE without many options other than to push certain talent that they feel could be big stars in the future.
WWE is set to do this with Reigns in a major way, by having him in a marquee match at WrestleMania 31. There were many rumors regarding Reigns. One was that he’d win the Royal Rumble and wrestle either The Rock or whoever the WWE World Heavyweight Champion might be at WrestleMania 31.
There was also talk of him simply having a major, main event level match. The problem is that WWE wants to have him built into something big by next April, but they do not know what they want to do with him currently….they just want it to be big regardless.
One idea that has been laid out concerns Brock Lesnar, the man who ended The Undertaker’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania 30. I’m sure Paul Heyman has reminded us of that enough. Lesnar told people from the beginning of the year that he wanted the WWE World Heavyweight Title. With him conquering “The Streak,” it would make sense to think that he could easily insert himself into the fold to become part of the title scene at SummerSlam.
As I revealed before Money in the Bank, John Cena was set to win the WWE World Heavyweight Title at the event then face Lesnar at SummerSlam. The way WWE seems to be going about things is by making Lesnar “Plan B” for when Cena wins at WWE Battleground in a few weeks. Reigns is also involved in the Fatal Four Way match, but he won’t win as Cena is set to hold the title until at least August.
The Plan B would simply be revealed following RAW or at the event. Triple H also has a Plan C with Seth Rollins and his Money in the Bank briefcase as well.
Lesnar is set to win at either SummerSlam or Night of Champions as NOC is supposed to be a stacked PPV due to WWE Network commitments expiring during this time. When Lesnar wins, it will be weird to see him with WWE up until WrestleMania 31 as that would be nearly 8 months of full TV schedule time. Lesnar’s average is 2-3 months total at a time. He only works TV tapings as well.
It wouldn’t make much sense for him to hold the title until WrestleMania, but for now that seems to be the plan for when he wins. From there, reports claim that Reigns will face him and win the World Title. This is WWE’s way of building Reigns as it would establish him as a main event threat, and he’d take out the very dangerous Lesnar, who is now the WrestleMania streak ender. Reigns is currently undefeated at WrestleMania, but as a singles star, he has never competed at the show of shows.
Lesnar and Reigns are quite similar, both with freakish athletic ability and physical styles with toughness considered to be immeasurable. Reigns has a lot of “pop style,” meaning he does moves that the crowd looks forward to so they can cheer for it to come, and when it happens, cheer louder. Cena also had a similar style until fans got sick of him over the years.
Lesnar’s style has always been simply physical, where he beats someone down until the match is done. The two could tell a good story and be a real main event for the show. Whether or not WWE keeps to this plan is unknown as they like to change their minds. For now, however, we will have this match to look forward to next year.
