A blue whale capsized a boat in the waters off San Diego. According to CBS 8, two boaters were thrown into the water when the huge blue whale bumped into their 23-foot vessel and turned it upside down. According to USCG Petty Officer Connie Terrell, another boater saw the incident and quickly reported it as he rushed over to help, pulling the two people to safety. The incident was compared to a “life raft” getting hit by a “school bus.”
According to FOX San Diego , no one was injured when the boat was flipped about 10 miles southwest of Point Loma. In case you were wondering exactly what happened, captain of the boat Offshore Blue Adventures, explained the scenario. Captain Cici Sayer said that she took a photographer out to get some photos of blue whales. Just as they were getting close to the whale that they had been tracking, the unexpected happened.
A second blue whale capsized their boat when it came up out of the water right next to them. The experience was one that neither Cici or the photographer will soon forget. A man who has identified himself as the photographer on board the boat said the following:
“I appreciate that the reporters did their best to cover the facts and not be sensationalist, but I will please note that in no way did I think I was going to get ‘close to a whale’ today. At least closer than etiquette allows, and for the record at no point was an attempt to get that close made. Thank you to those who send their best, and my sincerest gratitude to everyone involved with pulling me out of the water today.”
The blue whale that capsized the boat was not in danger according to the photographer. Many people seem curious about the boat’s proximity to these majestic creatures, and the photographer says that he completely understands their concerns. At the same time, many people know that photographers tend to go out of their way to get good photos. If the boat was too close to these whales, it sounds like the whales took care of things on their own. Naturally it’s not something to take lightly, and these people could have been seriously injured, but thankfully, they were not.
Whales have been in the news quite a bit lately. As previously reported by The Inquisitr , sometimes human interaction with whales is for a good cause. A video of a whale saying “thank you” to boaters who saved its life went viral just last month.
